FB: Nov. 7 Players of the Week

A pair of players that turned in record-setting performances share the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors.  Florida Atlantic freshman RB Devin Singletary ran for a school-record 252 yards and three touchdowns in a win at Rice, while Louisiana Tech junior WR Carlos Henderson became the first FBS player this season to have multiple games with five touchdowns, catching four scores and running for another in a victory at North Texas.  The Defensive Player of the Week honor went to Charlotte senior DB Terrance Winchester, who had a pair of interceptions in the 49ers win at Southern Miss.  The Special Teams Player of the Week award was given to Charlotte sophomore WR Juwan Foggie, who had a blocked punt for a touchdown at Southern Miss.  C-USA Football Players of the Week are voted on by a panel of the league’s media.

Singletary tallied 252 rushing yards on 23 carries and scored three touchdowns in a 42-25 win at Rice.  He averaged 11.0 yards per carry and had nine runs for 10+ yards.  Singletary had three catches for 11 yards and also added a 20-yard kick return to set the program’s all-purpose yardage mark with 283, breaking a record that was set in 2001, the first year FAU fielded a football team.  Historically, the freshman’s 252 rushing yards more than doubled his career high and broke Alfred Morris’ single-game record of 198 against UAB in 2011. His 252 yards are the 12th-highest total by any FBS player this season.  Along the way to his historic night, Singletary guided the Owls to a program high of 657 total yards and set a new yards per play record with 9.7.

Henderson posted eight catches for 133 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns, while he also had two rushing attempts for 28 yards and a touchdown on the ground for a total of five scores in LA Tech’s 45-24 road victory over North Texas.  Henderson became the second player in C-USA history to have multiple games with 4+ touchdowns in a single season (Patrick Edwards of Houston, 2011) and also the second player in C-USA history to have multiple games of scoring five touchdowns in a season (Matt Forte of Tulane, 2007).  He is also the only player in the country to score five or more touchdowns in a game twice this season. Henderson became only the second player in program history to have multiple games of scoring five touchdowns in a season (Kenneth Dixon).  Henderson has a team-high 15 receiving touchdowns this season, a mark that ranks first in the country and the second most in a single season in program history.  He has scored a touchdown in seven straight games he has played in.

Winchester returned from missing the previous four games due to injury to make a large impact in Charlotte’s 38-27 road victory at Southern Miss.  He grabbed a school-record two interceptions, added two solo tackles and a pass breakup as the defense limited the Golden Eagles to only 94 rushing yards.  His first pick came in the first quarter, securing the turnover in the end zone for a touchback and he added his second INT late in the fourth quarter, halting any Southern Miss attempted comeback, grabbing it at the five-yard line.  Led by his two interceptions, the 49ers grabbed a team season-high three during the contest.

Foggie came up with the biggest special teams play of the season for the 49ers with a blocked punt for a touchdown in the third quarter of the win at Southern Miss.  He raced through the punt block protection and got his hand on the kick, popping it straight up and into the awaiting arms of teammate Ed Rolle all alone in the end zone.  Foggie has both of the punt blocks in program history, adding another in 2014.  His block came at a crucial time in the contest, as USM was within 17 points, with a chance to cut into the deficit.
