MBB: Jan. 2 Players of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Conference USA announced 2018’s first set of weekly award winners as North Texas garnered its first nod of the campaign in Player of the Week Roosevelt Smart. UTSA claimed its sixth Freshman of the Week honor on the season as Jhivvan Jackson took home his third title. Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools.

Player of the Week
Roosevelt Smart, North Texas
Sophomore, 6-3, 185, G, Chicago, Ill.
North Texas opened C-USA action with a pair of road wins for the first time since 1991, with credit due to sophomore Roosevelt Smart. The guard bolstered the stat sheet with an average 25.5 points and 5.5 boards in two one-point wins over UTEP and UTSA. Smart rained a game-high 29 points on 69.2 percent shooting, hitting 3-of-5 3-pointers with a pair of steals at El Paso. The transfer from New Mexico Junior College carried the hot hand to San Antonio, where he posted 22 points, including 3 treys and a 9-of-10 showing from the charity stripe. Smart hit 53.8 percent of shots from the field (14-26) and marked a 46.2 percent clip from 3-point land on the week to guide the Mean Green to its first-ever 2-0 league start. The award is the first of his career.
