FB: Week Ten Preview

Amazingly, we will enter the final month of the 2018 regular season this weekend.  It will begin a day early, with a Friday night rivalry game ahead of four C-USA games and two non-conference contests on Saturday.

2018_Week_Ten_Previews

WKU and Middle Tennessee will be meeting for the 68th time on Friday night (7 p.m. CT), making it the most-played rivalry in Conference USA. Lately, it has been one of its most exciting, as four of the last six meetings in the series have gone into overtime and six of the last seven have been decided by one possession.

Saturday’s conference play begins with Marshall traveling to Southern Miss in a matchup of two of the league’s top defenses (2 p.m. CT).  The Thundering Herd are especially stout on the ground, ranking second in C-USA in rushing defense (105.7 yards per game), while the Golden Eagles have been tough to pass against, second in the league yielding 167.1 yards per outing.

Lone Star State rivals UTEP and Rice meet in Houston (2:30 p.m. CT).  This game features a matchup of the league’s two first-year coaches as Dana Dimel leads the Miners against Mike Bloomgren’s Owls.

The 18th annual Shula Bowl is set for Saturday evening in Miami, as Florida Atlantic makes the 40 mile drive south to battle FIU (6:30 p.m. CT).  The Panthers are off to their best start as a member of C-USA and bowl-eligible for the second straight season, but the defending East Division champion Owls would like to become the first school to win back-to-back years in this series since FIU in 2011-12.

UAB is off to a 5-0 start in league play and it will look to match its FBS school record for victories (8) with a win over UTSA at Legion Field, where the Blazers have won 10 straight games (6:30 p.m. CT).

There are a pair of non-conference games on the docket at SEC schools.  Charlotte will face an SEC school for just the second time when it visits Tennessee (3 p.m. CT), while Louisiana Tech visits Mississippi State, looking to get revenge for a home loss to the Bulldogs last season (6:30 p.m. CT).

**WKU junior LB Ben Holt had a career-high 19 tackles (8 solo) with one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry vs. FIU last week.  The 19 total tackles tied a WKU FBS record which was held by Andrew Jackson, who had 19 vs. Florida Atlantic in 2012.  The 19 tackles is a C-USA single game-high this season, surpassing the previous high of 18 by junior LB Sage Lewis of FIU vs. Indiana on Sept. 1.  Holt was only the 14th player in FBS this season to have 19-plus tackles in a game.  He is now fourth in C-USA with 75 total stops on the season.
**Hilltopper freshman RB Josh Samuel rushed for 83 yards against FIU, his second straight game eclipsing the 80-yard barrier.  He had a pair of rushes of 20+ yards, including a career-high 22-yarder in the 2nd quarter.
**Sophomore WR Jacquez Sloan has led WKU in receiving four times this season, including last week vs. FIU, reeling in five receptions for 69 yards.  On the season, he averages a team-high 15.0 yards per catch, totaling 27 grabs for 406 yards.

**Graduate QB Brent Stockstill guided the Blue Raider offense to 488 total yards and a 51-17 win at Old Dominion last week.  He completed 25-of-32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a third touchdown on the ground.  With 280 yards, Stockstill ran his career passing yards total to 10,669. That figure moves him past Paul Smith (Tulsa, 2005-07) for ninth place on Conference USA’s all-time passing list. Southern Miss’ Austin Davis (2008-11) is in 8th place with 10,892 yards.

All-Time Series: Southern Miss leads 7-6
Last Meeting: Southern Miss 28, at Marshall 27 (Nov. 25, 2017)

FAST FACTS
**Southern Miss running back Ito Smith rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown, his third consecutive game with at least 150 yards rushing, and quarterback Kwadra Griggs threw for three touchdowns last November as the Golden Eagles won in Huntington, 28-27.  Chase Litton threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns, with Ryan Yurachek pulling in seven passes for 56 yards and three touchdowns for Marshall.
**In its last three games, Marshall is averaging 254 rushing yards per game while holding the opposition to 109 per game. For the entire season, Marshall’s rush defense is allowing an average of 106 yards per game, which is No. 14 in the nation. For the month of October, Marshall’s offensive average ranked No. 15 in the nation.  Senior RB Tyler King had an October to remember, posting 485 rushing yards and three touchdowns in three October games.  King is the first Marshall player with three straight games of 100 or more rushing yards since Devon Johnson in 2014.
**In the fourth quarters of its last two games (wins over Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic), Marshall has run the football 28 times for 255 yards, an average of 9.1 yards per attempt.  In the two games combined, Marshall threw a total of three passes, completing two, for five yards.  Conversely, ODU and FAU combined to run the ball 15 times in the fourth quarters for 45 yards (3.0 per attempt).  They combined to throw 26 passes, completing 14, for 135 yards.  Marshall outscored ODU and FAU by a combined 28-10 in the fourth quarters of those two games.
**Prior to 2018, redshirt senior DL Malik Thompson had a career total of 12 tackles - just one of them solo, the others assists.  Against Florida Atlantic, Thompson made nine tackles (five on Owls star RB Devin Singletary), forced the first fumble of his career and also intercepted the first pass of his career.  That performance helped earn him C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 22.  On the season, Thompson now has 29 tackles - three of them are quarterback sacks.
**The Marshall defense has extended its streak of consecutive games without allowing a touchdown in the first quarter to 10.  The defense has allowed 12 combined points – on four field goals – in the first quarter over the last 10 games.
**Southern Miss senior LB Sherrod Ruff turned in a dominant performance in the Golden Eagles loss at Charlotte last Saturday.  He registered six tackles in the contest, which included 5.5 tackles for loss and one sack for eight yards.  The TFL total for Ruff ranks as the third-best ever for a Golden Eagle in a single contest.  He helped the Golden Eagles limit an opponent to under 225 yards of total offense for the fourth time this season.  Ruff leads the team in both TFLs (9.5) and sacks (4.0) this season.
*Southern Miss allowed just 224 yards of offense at Charlotte on Saturday after giving up up only 174 to UTSA the previous week.  The 398 combined yards over the past two games mark the fewest allowed over such a stretch since 350 to Savannah State and Troy from Sept. 10-17, 2016.  The Golden Eagles rank second in C-USA and eighth in the FBS in total defense, allowing 290.1 yards per game this season.
**Golden Eagles sophomore QB Jack Abraham threw for 210 yards last week (his seventh straight game passing for more than 200 yards) before leaving with an injury.  Redshirt freshman Tate Whatley replaced him and finished 6-for-8 for 87 yards with two touchdowns in his Southern Miss debut.  Abraham is expected to play this week.

Houston, Texas (Rice Stadium)
Television: ESPN3
Announcers: Alex Del Bario (PxP), Patrick Creighton (AN)
All-Time Series: Rice leads 14-7
Last Meeting: Rice 31, at UTEP 14 (Sept. 9, 2017)

FAST FACTS
**Rice has won six of the last seven games in the series, including last year’s 31-14 victory in El Paso.  The Owls rushed for 306 yards while holding the Miners to just 26 rushing yards, its fewest rushing yards allowed since 2014. Quarterback Sam Glaesman threw a TD and ran for a score for Rice.
**UTEP held Conference USA West Division leader UAB to a season-low 19 points, but a depleted Miner offense was held scoreless last week in the Sun Bowl.  The Miners also limited the Blazers to 357 total yards. The 19 points were the fewest scored by UAB versus a C-USA opponent in its remarkable two-year run since reinstating its football program.
**On the season, the Miners defense is allowing nearly a touchdown less (-6.8 points) than it did in 2017.  The unit is also allowing 64 yards less of total offense per outing.
**Over the last two games, UTEP opponents are 6-for-23 on third down conversions (26.1 percent).  During that stretch the Miners have risen from 101st in the nation in third down conversion defense to 65th (.388).  UTEP's third-down conversion defense for C-USA games only (.346) ranks fifth in the league
**UTEP quarterbacks are responsible for 420 of the team's 1,046 rushing yards (40.2 percent) in 2018.  The 420 yards are more than last year's leading rusher, Joshua Fields, compiled in all of 2017 (362).
Quarterbacks have accounted for seven of the Miners' 10 rushing scores this season, and the seven rushing TD's by signal-callers are the most for UTEP since 2004 (eight) when Orlando Cruz scored five TD's and Jordan Palmer had three on the ground.
**Owls senior K/P Jack Fox averaged 47.3 yards on seven punts at North Texas last week, placing five of seven inside the 20 to increase his league-leading total to 22 (12 inside the 10) and he also recovered a fumble on the return of the second half kickoff to set up an Owls touchdown.  He crushed a career-best, 76-yard punt in the second quarter that flipped the field from the Rice 5 to the North Texas 19. The punt was the longest by an Owl since 1990 and the sixth-longest in the NCAA this year.  It was his sixth this year of 60 yards or more and marked the fourth time this year he’s improved his career best (63, 64, 70, 76).   Fox had a pair of punts of more than 50 yards to extend his streak with at least one of 50 or more to 13 games.  He leads C-USA with a career-best 19 punts of 50 or better this year.
**True freshman Wiley Green took over as the Owls' starting quarterback at North Texas last week.  He completed 21-of-37 passes for 204 yards and one touchdown.  He became the sixth different player to start at quarterback for Rice since the beginning of the 2017 season.
**Sophomore WR Aaron Cephus has accounted for five of the Owls' 10 receiving touchdowns in 2018 after he added another score at North Texas.  Cephus has 31 receptions for 453 yards on the season.  His yard=per-catch average of 14.61 ranks tenth among C-USA players.
**Rice opened the North Texas game by driving 75 yards for a touchdown.  It was the second straight game and the third time this year it scored on its opening possession.  That also marked the first time it scored on its opening possession in back-to-back games since doing so vs. UTSA and Prairie View in 2016.

**For the second time this season, senior LB Juwan Foggie had two interceptions in a game, this time including a 79-yard return for a touchdown to carry Charlotte to a 20-17 victory over Southern Miss last Saturday.  His two interceptions give him an FBS-leading six on the season, which is a new 49ers school record.  Foggie’s 79-yard interception return is the longest in school history and gives him two Pick-Sixes on the season. Foggie added six tackles for the 49ers, who matched a school record with three interceptions in the game.

**This will be Tennessee’s second game against a Conference USA school this season.  The Volunteers defeated UTEP, 24-0, back on September 15.

**The UTSA offense remains perfect in the red zone this season.  The Roadrunners have scored 12 touchdowns and five field goals in their 17 trips inside their opponents’ 20-yard line through the first eight contests.  UTSA is one of just three FBS teams to score in each visit to the red zone this fall, joining Maryland (17-17) and Navy (25-25).
**The UTSA defense has shown a knack for creating takeaways this season, as the Roadrunners have come up with 17 for the turnover bucket through the first eight contests.  The Roadrunners lead Conference USA and rank 13th nationally in turnovers gained and they are first and 10th, respectively, in turnover margin (+8).  UTSA has recovered 10 fumbles — which leads the league and stands second among all FBS teams — and has picked off seven passes, a figure that ranks sixth in the conference and 47th in the country.

**UAB extended its school record winning streak to six games and have recorded 15 wins since the program returned last September, the most over a two-year span in school history (previous best was 13).  The Blazers continue to receive votes in the Associated Press and Amway Coaches polls.

**UAB set a Conference USA record with its third shutout of the season last week with the 19-0 victory at UTEP.  The Blazers are the only team in the country with multiple shutouts this season. UAB has not allowed a point in six-straight quarters, and in five C-USA games have held their opponents scoreless in 16 of 20 quarters.  Overall, UAB is allowing just 13.2 points per game this year, third in the FBS.
**UAB is tied with Oklahoma State for the national lead in sacks this season with 31.  The Blazers are now just three sacks away from the school record of 34.  The defense is also spreading the wealth as 14 players have recorded at least one sack.
**Blazers sophomore RB Spencer Brown had his second-consecutive 100-yard rushing performance and his fourth of the season with 21 carries for 103 yards and one touchdown last week UTEP.  Brown moved into a tie for third place on UAB’s career 100-yard rushing list with his 10th such performance, and he also moved into sixth place on UAB’s career rushing list.  Brown’s rushing touchdown was his 11th of the season, one more than his TD total from his Freshman All-America season last year.  He currently has 694 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns this season.  In 21 career games, Brown has 2,020 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns.
**UAB is one of just 10 FBS teams to have two wins vs. bowl eligible teams in 2018.
