Charles Bassey kicked off his Topper career with a double-double average against No. 25/24 Washington and UT Martin to snag the season’s first C-USA Freshman of the Week honor. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World Headwear.
Player of the Week
Jon Davis, Charlotte
Senior, 6-3, 200, G, Upper Marlboro, Maryland
Davis connected on the game-winning three-point bucket with under one second on the clock to defeat Oklahoma State, Saturday. Throughout the contest, Davis made his presence known. He scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in a second half that saw the Niners down by as many as 24 points. He also grabbed five boards and three assists while playing 38 minutes against the Cowboys. Against Chattanooga, he recorded his fourth career 30-point scoring effort with 31 points. It is Davis’s fifth career C-USA weekly award and his third C-USA Player of the Week award (Jan. 23, 2017 and March 4, 2018).
Freshman of the Week
Charles Bassey, WKU
Freshman, 6-11, 245, C, Lagos, Nigeria
Bassey averaged 13 points, 10.5 rebounds and three blocks across WKU’s opening loss at No. 25/24 Washington and home-opening victory over UT Martin. Against the Huskies, Bassey tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds while going up against 2018 First-Team All-Pac 12 selection Noah Dickerson, making him the first Hilltopper to record a double-double in his first game since Steve Miller in 1984-85. His 12 rebounds were the most by a WKU freshman in his debut since 1975. Against UT Martin, Bassey notched 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
