Player of the Week
Kierra Anthony, Louisiana Tech
Senior, 5-9, G, New Iberia, La.
Anthony eclipsed the C-USA and Louisiana Tech single-game scoring record when she erupted for 50 points to lead the Lady Techsters to a 100-88 overtime victory against Houston last Wednesday. The senior registered three steals and 44 of those points in the second half, including 13 in five overtime minutes, against a team that recorded a one-point loss at top-25 California. Anthony was instrumental in Louisiana Tech’s comeback win after the squad trailed by 16 late in the third frame. The guard led the takedown of another American foe that week, toppling Memphis 66-50 on Sunday. She bolstered the stat sheet with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Anthony averaged 35 points, 4.5 assists, three steals and three boards on the week, while sinking 20-of-21 free throws. The Louisiana native has now strung together four-straight 20+-point games this season. The award is the first of Anthony’s career and the second of the week after being named the ESPNW National Player of the Week.
Freshman of the Week
Ajah Wayne, Old Dominion
Freshman, 5-10, G/F, Birmingham, Ala.
Wayne collected her second-straight weekly award after notching her second double-double of the year in a 76-72 overtime win at Cincinnati. The newcomer racked up 24 points and 16 rebounds with three assists. The Alabama product then made the most of a start against Virginia, where she hit a trio of threes on five attempts and chipped in 13 points, six boards, four assists, three steals and a block. Wayne now tops all Monarchs in points, rebounds and steals and has reached double-figures in the team’s four games in 2018.
