DALLAS – UTSA sophomore guard Jhivvan Jackson tallied a career-high 32 points to claim the final C-USA Player of the Week award of 2018. WKU big man Charles Bassey nabbed his fourth freshman weekly award after anchoring the WKU interior defense in the Tops’ upset win over No. 15/16 Wisconsin. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World. Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools.
Player of the Week
Jhivvan Jackson, UTSA
Sophomore, 6-0, 160, G, Bayamón, Puerto Rico
Jackson posted career highs in points (32) and rebounds (10) in his first career double-double Saturday, leading UTSA to a win over Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Puerto Rico native went 10-of-20 from the field and 4-of-11 from range in the win. To date, the sophomore has three career 30+ point games and owns eight consecutive 20+ point games. Since returning to the starting lineup over the last five games, Jackson is averaging 25 points and six rebounds per game. It is the eighth C-USA weekly award in Jackson’s decorated career.
Freshman of the Week
Charles Bassey, WKU
Freshman, 6-11, 245, C, Lagos, Nigeria
Bassey went toe-to-toe with one of the best players in the country Saturday in Preseason All-American Ethan Happ, leading the Hilltoppers to an 83-76 home upset of the No. 15/16 Badgers. Bassey finished with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, hitting all five of his free throws. He tacked on six rebounds, two assists, a steal and four blocks. Bassey helped hold Happ to 9-of-23 shooting from the field, swatting away multiple of the senior star’s shots in the final minutes of the game. It is the fourth C-USA weekly award in Bassey’s burgeoning career.
