FB: C-USA All-Academic Team Announced

DALLAS – Eleven Conference USA student-athletes were named to the 2019 C-USA Football All-Academic Team, the league announced Thursday. Players hailing from 10 programs were recognized for their excellence on and off the field this season. Southern Miss led with two selections and Florida Atlantic’s Harrison Bryant was rostered for the second year in a row.

Charlotte punter Connor Bowler has appeared in ten games for the 49ers while also managing a perfect 4.000 as an electrical engineering major. The redshirt sophomore ranks eighth in C-USA punting average, accumulating seven kicks of 50+ yards. Bowler is the only academic team member to earn an unblemished GPA.

FIU redshirt senior quarterback James Morgan was deemed a 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist for his academic accomplishments, polishing off a 3.77 GPA while earning his master’s in public administration. The Panther hurler ranks in the league’s top 10 in passing yards with 15 touchdowns. His three interceptions marks the second-lowest in C-USA.

Repeat selection and senior Harrison Bryant leads Florida Atlantic with 61 receptions for nearly 1,000 yards, good for third in the league, and six touchdowns heading into the C-USA Championship game. The health administration major worked a 3.65 GPA and is listed among the nation’s top-75 receivers, best among tight ends, in yardage, receiving yards per game and receptions per game.

Representing Louisiana Tech is redshirt senior Bailey Hale. The kicker polished off a 3.833 GPA in his business administration studies and was listed as a 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District nominee. Hale leads all C-USA kickers with an average eight points per game and was named the conference’s Kicker of the Week for setting a school record with 19 points posted against FIU this year.

Marshall redshirt senior Tyler Brown is the program’s seventh-leading tackler this season with 45 stops in 12 games. He also recorded a sack for a safety at Florida Atlantic. The finance major marked a 3.67 GPA and is a two-time C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll member.

A three-time C-USA Honor Roll selection, Khalil Brooks crafted a 3.518 GPA as a leisure sport and tourism major, and is now working toward a master’s degree. The redshirt senior became a Senior CLASS Award candidate and a two-time C-USA Defensive Player of the Week recipient in 2019. The linebacker currently ranks inside Middle Tennessee’s top five all-time in QB sacks and tackles for loss.

Rice junior Blaze Alldredge donned a 3.576 GPA with a focus in political science. The tackler led Rice with 102 total and is tied for fourth nationally with 21.5 tackles for loss. That mark bested the school record and matches the C-USA lead this season.

Jack Abraham was honored as a 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District winner for his 3.915 effort as a liberal studies student. The quarterback has registered C-USA top-five numbers in passing average per game, passing efficiency and total offense. Abraham became just the sixth Golden Eagle to throw for 2,000+ yards in multiple seasons.

The second Golden Eagle tabbed to the academic squad, De’Michael Harris inked a 3.644 as an exercise science senior. The running back, listed as a wide receiver at the start of the year, spearheads the team rankings in average rushing yards with five touchdowns. Harris owns both of Southern Miss’ 100-yard rushing performances this year.

North Texas senior Thomas Preston III made his first career start at left guard for the Mean Green in the 2019 season opener. The juco transfer earned a 3.916 GPA in integrative studies and was recognized as one of Pro Football Focus’ 50-best interior linemen in 2019.

Rounding out the all-academic team is UTEP redshirt senior Treyvon Hughes. A running back and master’s student in leadership studies, Hughes paces the Miners in carries, rushing yards and touchdowns. His offensive prowess has him ranked second in C-USA and top-20 nationally in rushing touchdowns. The Texas product became the first UTEP player to rush for 10+ scores in a single season since 2016.
