MBB: Feb. 4 Players of the Week

DALLAS – UTSA runnin’ buddies Jhivvan Jackson and Keaton Wallace have been named C-USA Co-Players of the Week after each posted a top-three all-time single-game scoring output. WKU stalwart center Charles Bassey repeated as C-USA Freshman of the week following a hefty double-double average in a pair of Hilltopper wins. Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools.

Co-Player of the Week
KEATON WALLACE, UTSA
Sophomore, 6-3, 170, G, Dallas, Texas
Wallace posted the third-highest single-game scoring output in C-USA history and the second-most in UTSA annals with 45 points in a win at Marshall in a battle of first-place teams. He set a career high in points (45), making 15-of-24 shots from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point land. Wallace poured in a staggering 14 points in five minutes of overtime and added seven rebounds and three steals at Marshall. His effort against the Herd came after logging 26 points in a career-high 42 minutes on Thursday at WKU. Wallace finished the week with splits of 35.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in a staggering total of 81 minutes. Wallace is averaging 20.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in 2018-19, joining fellow sophomore teammate and C-USA honoree Jhivvan Jackson as the nation’s second-highest scoring duo behind Duke’s Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett. It is Wallace’s first C-USA weekly award on the season and the fourth in his career.

Co-Player of the Week
JHIVVAN JACKSON, UTSA
Sophomore, 6-0, 160, G, Bayamón, Puerto Rico
Jackson put together a pair of prolific scoring outings in two overtime thrillers on the road. The sophomore posted a career-high 46 points – the third-most in UTSA history and the second-most in C-USA annals – on Thursday at WKU, hitting 8-of-14 3-pointers and going 16-of-31 from the field in a career-high 44 minutes. Against Marshall, he went for 30 points and nine rebounds over 42 minutes, collecting two steals and a block. Jackson is currently riding a streak of six straight 20-plus point games and has three 30-plus point games on the year. It is the 10th C-USA weekly award in Jackson’s ornamented career.

Freshman of the Week
CHARLES BASSEY, WKU
Freshman, 6-11, 245, C, Lagos, Nigeria

Bassey averaged a dominant 19.5 points and 15 rebounds across two victories for WKU last week. The big man also shot 68.2 percent from the field, netted 9-of-14 free throws and finished the week with a C-USA-best 11 double-doubles. Bassey tallied 22 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in Thursday’s overtime win over league-leading UTSA. His 18 rebounds are the most by a Hilltopper freshman since freshmen became eligible to play again in 1972, and he is one of seven players in the nation with at least three games of 17-plus rebounds this year. Bassey followed that up with another double-double in a win over UTEP, putting together 17 points and 12 boards. He also averaged 36 minutes per game over the week. It is the sixth C-USA weekly award in Bassey’s thriving career.
