DALLAS – Marshall star Jon Elmore planted his flag atop the Conference USA all-time scoring list (2,471 points) after posting 20 at North Texas. His historical achievement helped the senior guard snag his first C-USA Player of the Week honor this season. WKU big man Charles Bassey nabbed his ninth C-USA Freshman of the Week award, placing him one shy of the conference record. Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
Player of the Week
JON ELMORE, MARSHALL
Senior, 6-3, 185, G, Charleston, West Virginia
Elmore averaged 27 points, 6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game during which could be described as his best shooting week of the season, 55.2 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc, to help lead the Herd to a pair of road victories. Elmore also became the all-time leading scorer in Conference USA history during the win at North Texas. At Louisiana Tech, Elmore scored 34 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out seven helpers to hand the Bulldogs their first home loss of the season and end their 15-game home win streak. The game marked the third time this season he’s had 30-plus points. At North Texas, Elmore poured in 20 points and collected another six boards. He knocked down 5-of-8 from deep, and helped the Herd rally from a 14-point deficit for the victory. The award is Elmore’s first on the season and the fifth of his career.
Freshman of the Week
CHARLES BASSEY, WKU
Freshman, 6-11, 245, C, Lagos, Nigeria
Bassey once again averaged a double-double in two group one wins for WKU, averaging 13.5 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. The freshman notched his C-USA-leading 14th double-double in a road victory at UAB on Thursday with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Then, he tallied nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks in 31 minutes in a home victory over Southern Miss. Bassey shot 52.9 percent from the field during the week and made 9-of-10 free throws. It is the ninth C-USA Freshman of the Week award in Bassey’s career, which places him second in league history behind Rice’s Marcus Evans (10, 2015-16).
