Jahmir Young produced his third C-USA Freshman of the Week trophy after stepping up to lead the Niners to its first 2-0 start in C-USA action since 2004-05 (its first stint in the conference). Awards are chosen by a vote from a media panel representing the 14 member schools. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World.
Co-Player of the Week
DEVON ANDREWS, FIU
Senior, 6-6, 190, F, Lorain, Ohio
Andrews led FIU to a 2-0 record on the weekend behind 21.0 points per game on 37.5 percent shooting from the field. The senior also averaged six rebounds to help FIU remain undefeated at home. In the conference opener against UTEP, Andrews posted a squad-best 16 points and logged three assists. During the overtime thriller against UTSA, the Ohio native recorded a season-best 26 points while shooting 40.9 percent from the field. The forward also tallied nine rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals against the Roadrunners. It is the first C-USA weekly award in the senior’s career.
Co-Player of the Week
CARSON WILLIAMS, WKU
RS-Junior, 6-5, 230, F, Owenton, Kentucky
Continuing to step up as a 6-foot-5 center after the injury to Charles Bassey, Williams led WKU to a 2-0 start in league play by averaging 18 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 35 minutes per game in home victories over North Texas and Rice. He also shot 71.4 percent from the field and made his only three-point attempt. In a 68-61 win over Rice, Williams notched a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while making 10 of 14 shots from the field in 37 minutes. In a 93-84 comeback win over North Texas, he tallied 14 points and four assists on 5-of-7 shooting. Williams also had two blocks, two steals and zero turnovers across the week.
Freshman of the Week
JAHMIR YOUNG, CHARLOTTE
Freshman, 6-1, 185, G, Hyattsville, Maryland
Young played a major role in helping the 49ers start conference play 2-0 in C-USA for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Charlotte was without leading scorer
Jordan Shepherd due to injury, but Young stepped in to lead his squad in victories over UAB and Middle Tennessee. Against the Blazers, he scored a game-high 18 points on 61.5 percent shooting from the field. He recorded one turnover in 37 minutes of action as the 49ers primary ball handler. In the win over Middle Tennessee, he scored a team-high 15 points while dishing out a season-high tying five assists in 38 minutes. It is the third weekly award in Young’s career.
