MBB: Championship Pairings Set

DALLAS – After earning its first Conference USA regular season championship, North Texas will be the No. 1 seed at the 2020 Air Force Reserve C-USA Basketball Championships presented by Baylor Scott & White Sports Performance Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.  The Mean Green won their first outright regular season C-USA title in 30 years with a conference record of 14-4 and an overall mark of 20-11.  As the top seed, North Texas will have a first-round bye at the championship.

Other teams receiving first-round byes include No. 2 WKU, No. 3 Louisiana Tech and No. 4 Charlotte.  North Texas will be attempting to win its first conference postseason tournament since 2010 and become just the sixth school in C-USA history to win the regular season and postseason titles in the same season.  WKU finished 13-5 in conference play earning the second seed for the second straight season.  Louisiana Tech also posted a 13-5 mark in league action, its best showing since the 2016-17 season.  Charlotte, which has doubled its win total from last season (8 to 16), has earned a first round bye for the first time since returning to C-USA in 2013-14 and the first time in C-USA since 2004-05.
 
Wednesday’s four-game action begins at 6 p.m. CT on Court A when No. 8 seed Old Dominion squares off with No. 9 Florida Atlantic.  The Monarchs won a pair of regular season meetings between the teams in Norfolk this year.  A.J. Oliver II scored 21 points to lead ODU to a 65-55 win on January 25 and Malik Curry poured in 29 during an 85-80 overtime triumph on March 1.  Jailyn Ingram led FAU in both outings, with 16 and 19 points, respectively.
 
Next door on Court B, a showdown between No. 5 seed FIU and No. 12 Rice tips off at 6:30 p.m.  Rice hit 14 three-pointers and placed five players in double-figures in the Owls 92-78 win in Houston on January 11.  Ako Adams hit five treys and finished with a game-high 19 points for Rice, while Devon Andrews and Trejon Jacob each had 19 points and seven rebounds for FIU.
 
No. 7 seed UAB will face No. 10 UTSA at 8:30 p.m. as the teams meet for the second straight year in Frisco.  The Blazers posted an 84-76 win in last year’s quarterfinals.  The teams split a pair of regular season matchups in San Antonio this year.  UAB won the first game, 76-68 on January 30, as Tavin Lovan scored 19 points and Will Butler had 18.  The Roadrunners took the second meeting, 66-59 on March 1, with Jhivvan Jackson pouring in 28 points.
 
No. 6 seed Marshall and No. 11 UTEP will meet to finish Wednesday evening play at 9 p.m. CT on Court B. The Thundering Herd has won its first game at the C-USA Championship four straight years, beginning with an 87-85 victory over UTEP in the 2016 quarterfinals.  Marshall also won the only regular season meeting between the squads this season, 71-61 in El Paso on February 15.  Mikel Beyers hit four 3-pointers and finished with 18 to lead the Herd, while Bryson Williams poured in a game-high 23 for the Miners.
 
In Thursday's quarterfinal round, No. 1 North Texas will take on the winner of the Old Dominion-Florida Atlantic game at 6 p.m. on Court A and No. 4 Charlotte will face either FIU or Rice beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Court B. No. 2 seed WKU will battle either UAB or UTSA at 8:30 p.m. on Court A, while No. 3 seed Louisiana Tech will close out Thursday night against the winner of the Marshall-UTEP contest at 9 p.m. on Court B.
 
Coverage of the first round will be available through ESPN+, while the four quarterfinal games will be available on affiliates of Stadium and Facebook.  The semifinal games will be shown on CBS Sports Network at 1 p.m. and 3:30 pm (CT).  CBS Sports Network will also broadcast the championship game on Saturday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
