CHARLOTTE – Behind
Marlee Fray’s brace, UTSA claims the first Conference USA Women’s Soccer Championship title in program history after topping Florida Atlantic, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field.
Just under a minute and a half into the first overtime period,
Isa Hernandez’s corner found the head of Fray, whose finish ricocheted off the right post into the net for the game-winning goal. It marks the first multi-goal performance for the redshirt junior. The Owls managed to create nine shots over the final 18 minutes of extra time but couldn’t find an equalizer.
Fray earned a spot on the all-tournament team, along with goalkeeper
Mia Krusinski, who made four saves in the victory. She finished the tournament with 10 saves. Forward Anna Sutter was named the Offensive MVP, and defender Kendall Kloza garnered Defensive MVP honors.
Following a quiet opening third of the match, the first goal came from Fray, who was in the right place at the right time after
Lexi Gonzalez misplayed a bouncing ball. Fray dribbled to find the open look and scored on the empty net just 30 seconds after entering the match.
The Roadrunners quickly followed up with a second just four minutes later with
Sabrina Hillyer playing a ball ahead to a sprinting
Kiran Singh, who finished the play by slotting one to the right of Gonzalez for her seventh goal of the season.
In the 55
th minute,
Bri Austin played a through ball to the left side of the box to
Morgan McDonald, and the freshman midfielder buried it into the side of the net to cut the UTSA lead in half. FAU leveled the score in the 67
th minute, when
Elin Simonardottir headed in McDonald’s corner.
The Roadrunners earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and await the announcement of their first-round opponent in the 2022 Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament. The selection show will air on NCAA.com Monday at 3 p.m. CT.
