MBK: Middle Tennessee Claims C-USA Regular-Season Title

Middle Tennessee clinched its first Conference USA regular-season title outright by edging host UAB, 66-64, on Sunday afternoon. It was the 14th win away from home for the Blue Raiders, who improved to 25-4 overall and 15-1 in C-USA play.

The game was tied eight times and featured 11 lead changes, providing fans with March excitement a few days before the calendar turns. MT senior JaCorey Williams, playing in front of his hometown Birmingham crowd, hit the go-ahead shot with 4.4 seconds on the clock. UAB’s Dirk Williams (Homewood, Ala.) put up a shot from the corner as time expired, but the potential game winner bounced off the rim.

Williams finished with 15 points, while classmate Reggie Upshaw Jr. (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tossed in 19 points with three 3-pointers. Upshaw rounded out his stat line with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

UAB junior Chris Cokley (Savannah, Ga.) scored a game-high 22 points, hitting 10-of-10 attempts at the free throw line. Classmate William Lee (Plantersville, Ala.) contributed 17 points and five rebounds.
