Charlotte Women's Basketball Signs LaShanta Johnson
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers women's basketball coach Katie Meier announced today that LaShanta Johnson has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Niners next season. A 5-8 guard, Johnson was recently tabbed the fifth-best junior college guard and 25th-best junior college player in the nation by the All Star Girls Report.
A Winston-Salem, N.C., native, Johnson joins the 49ers after playing two seasons for Dennis Cox at Daytona Beach Community College, where she earned honorable mention All-America honors this season. She led the Falcons in scoring both seasons, becoming the first player in school history to score over 1,000 points. She led the team with 16 points per game as a freshman and followed that with a 23 points-per-game average in conference play this season.
"The addition of LaShanta to this class makes it very, very solid," Meier said. "She's a versatile player who can fit in with any system and can play several positions. LaShanta had a tremendous career at Daytona Beach and we fully expect that trend to continue. She is a phenomonal athlete and will be very hard to contain."
Prior to attending DBCC, Johnson was a two-time AP all-state selection at Robert B. Glenn High School in Winston-Salem. As a senior, she received the Mary Garber Award, awarded annually to the state's top-ranked women's basketball player. She was a three-time Piedmont Triad Conference Player of the Year and is still the only player in school history to score over 2,000 points.
Johnson is the seventh signee for Charlotte. She joins a recruiting class that was ranked 24th nationally by the All Star Girls Report following the early signing period.
