SWIM: Oct. 11 Athletes of the Week

After posting a pair of individual wins in the freestyle sprints at the Owls Invitational, Rice sophomore Lauren Rhodes earns the first C-USA Swimmer of the Week accolade of the season.  FIU senior Rebecca Quesnel picked up three first-place finishes en route to diver of the week honors.

Rhodes blazed to a pair of individual wins in the freestyle sprints at the Owls’ home invitational meet vs. Houston and Incarnate Word last weekend.  Rhodes won the 50-free with a 23.31 that is currently the 16th fastest time in the nation in the early season.  She also won the 100-free with a 51.46 that is among the NCAA’s Top 50 marks.  The Charlotte, N.C., native also swam on all four of Rice’s winning relays, including the 200- and 400-free, and the 200- and 400-medley.  She swam the second leg of Rice’s 200-freestyle relay that posted a 1:33.37 for the NCAA’s No.7-ranked sprint relay.  Rhodes was the anchor leg of the Owls’ 400-medley relay that registered the No. 9 time in the NCAA with a 3:47.50.
 
DIVER OF THE WEEK
Rebecca Quesnel, FIU, Jr., Burlington, Ontario
Quesnel, a 2017 All-American, earned her 18th career C-USA Diver of the Week award with a strong debut showing at the FIU Fall Classic and a dual meet vs. Miami (Fla.).  She scored a meet-high 289.90 NCAA Standard in the 1-meter program in the FIU Classic as the Panthers cruised to first place over five other competing schools.  Quesnel also placed first in the 3-meter with a 264.35 mark.  Additionally, the Burlington, Ontario native led FIU to a convincing 164.5-115.5 triumph over Miami, with an NCAA Standard score of 289.57 in the 1-meter and Quesnel finished second in the 3-meter program in that event at 270.60, trailing only teammate Rachel Ford.
