SWIM: FIU Wins Fourth Straight Championship

ATLANTA – FIU captured its fourth-straight Conference USA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday, finishing the four-day event with 1,031 total points, the highest score in C-USA history. Three-time C-USA champion Rice placed second with 781 points and Marshall took third with a score of 513.

Naomi Ruele of FIU was tabbed C-USA Swimmer of the Meet for the second time after tallying three individual victories and being a part of four relay winning teams. The junior set a new school record in the 500-yd freestyle (22.11), defended her title in the 100 backstroke (52.54) and won the 100-yard freestyle (48.67).
After leading throughout the entire championship en-route to a fourth consecutive title, Panther head coach Randy Horner was named C-USA Swimming Coach of the Year for a league-record fourth consecutive season.

On the boards, a strong display by FIU senior Rebecca Quesnel netted her the 2018 C-USA Diver of the Meet award for the second time in three years. In the 1-Meter she claimed gold with a score of 297.80 and in the platform diving she took first place honors following a 251.35.

FIU Diving Coach Rio Ramirez took home the C-USA Diving Coach of the Year award for the third time in the last five seasons.

All championship superlative awards were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Elsewhere individually on the final day: Florida Atlantic sophomore Spence Atkins posted a pair of first place finishes, winning the 200 yard fly (1:57.87) and the 1600 yard free (16:22.97).  Rice’s Marie-Claire Schillinger broke her own school record to win the title in the 200-breaststroke with a 2:10.42.  FIU senior Skye Carey won the 200 back with a mark of 1:56.31 for the first individual C-USA title of her career.

FIU ended up sweeping all five relays at the meet, winning the final event of the 2018 Championships in the 4×100 free relay.  The team of Litizzia Bertelli (48.67), Carey (49.97), Megan Bowen (49.79) and Ruele (48.53) finished nearly four seconds ahead of the competition in 3:16.96.
