WSOC: Duke Beats ODU 1-0 In NCAA First Round Heartbreaker

DURHAM, North Carolina – Duke's Caitlin Cosme scored on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box with 17 seconds left to lift No. 1 seed Duke to a 1-0 victory over Conference USA champion Old Dominion at Koskinen Stadium on the Duke campus.

The Monarchs (13-5-1) battled tough against one of the four top seeds in the tournament. Duke (14-3-1) outshot the Monarchs 19-4 overall and 6-0 in shots on goal, but ODU goalkeeper Kasey Perry made five saves to keep her team in the game. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for ODU.

Old Dominion won the C-USA East Division title in the regular season with a 6-1-1 conference mark, and the Monarchs earned the C-USA automatic bid with a 1-0 victory in the Conference USA Women’s Soccer Championship final over Southern Miss on November 7.
