SB: Marshall's Aly Harrell Wins 2022 Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas Marshall infielder Aly Harrell has been selected as the 2022 Senior CLASS Award winner in NCAA Division I softball, the organization announced on Wednesday. The award is voted on by DI softball coaches, national softball media and fans and is given annually to the most outstanding senior or graduate level student athlete in softball. Harrell is the first Marshall student-athlete to win the award.

The acronym Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, focuses on the whole student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. In order for a student-athlete to eligible for this award they must be a NCAA Division I senior or graduate student with notable achievements in the classroom, community, character, and competition.

Harrell was first chosen as one of 30 candidates among all the seniors across Division I softball in March before being selected as one of 10 finalists in April. The Gahanna, Ohio, native is the sixth player in Marshall Athletics history to be selected as a finalist and the third softball player to be picked, but the first to be honored as a winner.

In the community, Harrell has spent time working with little league teams, volunteering in spaces like the VA hospital and Hoops Children’s hospital. As for her accomplishments in the classroom, she earned spots on the Conference USA Honor Roll twice and took advantage of her extra season to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree in the College of Science.

On the field, Harrell played in 220 games for the Herd throughout her career. During those games, she posted a .390 batting average, recorded 220 hits, scored 141 runs, registered a .752 slugging percentage and became just the third player in program history to reach base in 200 games. She also received four First Team All-Conference USA selections and is a NFCA All-Mideast Region Honoree.
