DALLAS – Rice’s Max Fiedler and FIU’s Dashon Gittens earned Conference USA Men’s Basketball weekly honors. The 2022-23 C-USA Players of the Week awards are presented by Blenders Eyewear and are voted on by the league’s sports information directors.
 
Fiedler garners his first career Player of the Week honor after averaging 21 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in a pair of road wins last week, including just the second triple-double in program history against UTSA. He sank 80 percent of his shots (20-25) on the week to move into first among Division I student-athletes in field-goal percentage (77.3).
 
Gittens grabs his second Freshman of the Week award of the season and the third-straight for the Panthers (9-11, 3-6 C-USA) after averaging 7.7 points on 60 percent shooting (9-15). After missing a pair of contests and getting into foul trouble against North Texas to open the week, he posted back-to-back double-digit efforts – his first in C-USA play – to close out the week.  
 
Player of the Week – Max Fiedler, Rice – Forward – Indialantic, Fla.
Fiedler became the first Division I player in the last 10 years to have a 20-point triple-double while connecting on 85 percent of his shots from the field after posting a season-high 24 points on 85.7 percent shooting (12-14) against UTSA on Monday. He added 13 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists to help the Owls (14-5, 5-3 C-USA) erase an 18-point deficit in an 88-81 overtime win. Fiedler followed that up by scoring 18 points on 8-11 shooting with four rebounds and four assists in a 72-60 victory at North Texas, marking the most points allowed by a North Texas team since the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
 
Freshman of the Week – Dashon Gittens, FIU – Guard – Harford, Conn.
In his return to the lineup, Gittens tallied an assist in just 12 minutes against North Texas on Monday after getting into foul trouble but responded with 11 points on 4-5 shooting against UTEP on Thursday. He converted all three attempts from the free-throw line and added two rebounds and an assist. Gittens wrapped up the week with 12 points on 5-9 shooting, including 2-4 from three-point range, in a win over UTSA on Saturday. He dished out a pair of assists and grabbed two more boards versus the Roadrunners.
