OTF: May 2 Athletes of the Week

DALLAS – UTEP’s 4x100-meter Relay Team was named Female Track Athletes of the Week after clocking a time of 44.05 that ranks No. 2 on the Miners’ top-10 list and No. 16 nationally. Teammate, Arianne Morais earns field honors after ranking fourth in the nation in javelin. Middle Tennessee’s Alaba Akintola was named Male Track Athlete for the second consecutive week after improving his national ranking from 19th to 11th in the 100m. UTSA’s Jemuel Miller earns field honors after a podium finish in the triple jump last Saturday at the Texas Invitational in Austin. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Blenders Eyewear.

C-USA Female Track Athletes of the Week- UTEP’s 4x100-meter Relay Team, El Paso, Texas
The women’s 4x100 team composed of Zani Meaders, Niesha Burgher, Denae McFarlane, and Oghenekaro Brume clocked in a C-USA-best 44.05 at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, on April 29. UTEP ranks No. 1 in C-USA and 16th nationally. The Miners' new time ranks No. 2 on the program's top-10 list. This also marks the first time a relay team has won a C-USA weekly award.

C-USA Female Field Athlete of the Week- Arianne Morais, UTEP, Jr., Oslo, Norway
Morais tossed 53.82 meters (176-7), placing second in the javelin at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, on April 29. She’s fourth nationally and the current leader in C-USA with 57.38m (188-3).

C-USA Male Track Athlete of the Week- Alaba Akintola, Middle Tennessee, Sr., Ondo, Nigeria
Akintola won a pair of events for consecutive weeks in the 100m and 200m. Akintola ran a 10.08s time in the 100m final and 20.93s in the 200m for first place finishes. His 100m mark ranks him No. 19 in the nation. Akintola's two wins contributed to the teams total of six event wins at the Music City Challenged hosted by Vanderbilt.

C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week- Jemuel Miller, UTSA, So., Bridgetown, Barbados
Miller skipped to yet another podium finish in the triple jump last Saturday at the Texas Invitational in Austin. The sophomore All-American finished third overall and second among collegiate competitors behind only Florida State's Jeremiah Davis with a mark of 15.50 meters (50-10.25) despite a 3.4 meters-per-second headwind. The Barbados native and three-time conference champion currently ranks 17th nationally with his league-leading jump of 16.08m (52-9.25) from the Texas Relays earlier this season.
