HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – No. 3 WKU hoisted the CUSA Basketball Championship trophy for the first time in program history after defeating No. 5 UTEP, 78-71, in Saturday’s title showdown.
Junior guard
Don McHenry, the CUSA Men’s Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player, scored a game-high 25 points on 9-16 shooting, including 15 points on 6-11 shooting in the second half. He also tallied three of his four steals in the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard
Brandon Newman added 15 points and was named to the all-tournament team, along with graduate forward
Rodney Howard, who averaged 10 points and four rebounds per contest.
The Hilltoppers trailed 53-47 with 13 minutes remaining before rattling off a 20-4 run to take the lead for good. McHenry accounted for half of the team’s points during that stretch.
WKU secures CUSA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and awaits their first-round opponent, which will be announced tomorrow on the Selection Sunday show at 5 p.m. CT on
CBS.
