DALLAS – Conference USA announced Monday its weekly award winners for week one. The weekly awards are voted on by a panel of the league’s media.
Offensive Player of the Week – Maverick McIvor, WKU – Gr. – QB – San Angelo, Texas
McIvor posted another impressive stat line to lead the Hilltoppers (2-0, 1-0 CUSA) to a 55-6 victory over North Alabama. In two-and-a-half quarters of play, McIvor threw for 305 yards and five touchdowns on 24-31-0 passing. The Hilltoppers had built a 42-6 lead by halftime, and McIvor had 275 yards and five touchdowns – the most by a CUSA quarterback in a half since Nov. 5, 2022. Through two games this season, McIvor has thrown for 706 yards and eight touchdowns. The Hilltoppers have won both games and put up a combined 96 points – the highest point total through the first two games of a season for the program in its FBS era.
Defensive Player of the Week – Mekhi Mason, LA Tech – R-Jr. – LB – Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Mason had a game to remember on Saturday as he celebrated his birthday with nine tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks on Saturday against Southeastern. His 4.5 TFLs are the third-most tackles for loss in a single game in program history and the most in a game since 2018. Mason was a vital part of Tech’s (1-0) defense that earned a shutout over Southeastern, while holding the Lion offense to just 273 total yards in the contest.
Special Teams Player of the Week – John Hoyet Chance, LA Tech – R-Fr. – P – Shreveport, La.
Chance pulled double duty as the kickoff specialist and the punter in the Bulldogs’ opener against SLU. The redshirt freshman punted seven times for 336 yards for an average of 48.0 yards per kick. He recorded a long punt of 59 yards, while four of his punts went for 50+ yards and landed three inside the 20-yard line.
Freshman of the Week – Caden Williams, Liberty – R-Fr. – RB – Calhoun, Ga.
In the Flames’ 28-7 season-opening victory over Maine, Williams ranked second on Liberty’s roster in rushing yards (52) and third in rushing attempts (9), good for 5.8 yards per carry. He played a key role in helping the Flames (1-0) finish the game with 194 total rushing yards. Williams posted Liberty’s longest rushing play of the game with a 23-yard rush in the third quarter.
Offensive Lineman of the Week – Fintan Brose, Delaware – Gr. – OL – Irwin, Pa.
In the 35-17 win over Delaware State, the Blue Hens’ first as an FBS member, Brose shifted positions along the offensive front to make his first-ever start at center in the absence of injured Steven Demboski. A first-time captain, Brose anchored a line that paved the way for 137 total rushing yards with an average of 5.3 yards per carry.
