Limitless: Extra Yard for Teachers Teacher Spotlight Angela Meyer

Angela Meyer | Otis Brown Elementary 1st Grade Teacher

What is the best thing about being a teacher?
The best thing about being a teacher is teaching my students how to read and seeing the confidence it builds in them.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
I had a wonderful kindergarten teacher that made learning fun and helped me be excited about learning.  She is still in contact with me and actually attended my wedding when I got married.

What was your favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject in school was reading.  I loved reading new books.  I also enjoyed PE and playing basketball in junior high and high school.

What makes a “good” day at school?
A good day at school is when my students are on task, ready to learn.  The day flows smoothly and the students are excited about their new learning. A good hug from a student always makes my day too!

How do you remember all your students’ names?
I just have to practice saying their name, as they raise their hand or need something.  It also helps when I create their name plates on their desk and remember where they sit.

If you could take your students anywhere on a field trip, where would you take them?
I would like to take my students to a real farm, where they could learn about the animals and touch them and learn what to feed them.

What advice can you share for future teachers?
Teaching is a hard profession. Always remember why you wanted to be a teacher and how it makes you feel when you reach that goal.  Learn to know and become friends with your teammates and work as a team to make the year easier. Teaching was never meant to be done alone.  Find the place that makes you feel at home and where you can be your best!
