Conference USA Announces All-Freshman Team


CHICAGO - Conference USA announced its 2001 All-Freshman football team today, as selected by the league's 10 head football coaches and media members in each conference city. Southern Miss placed a league-high five players on the team, while Cincinnati, Tulane and UAB each had four.

Four of USM's five selections came on offense, including offensive lineman Jeremy Parquet and Myron Powe. Wide receiver Chris Johnson finished second on the team in receiving with 32 receptions for 355 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Running back James Walley saw extensive action during the final month of the season, gaining 236 yards and scoring three times.

Cincinnati's four selections are headlined by quarterback Gino Guidugli, who posted a 7-3 record in games he played in. He ranks second among the nation's freshmen in completions (18.7 per game), fourth in total offense (249.8) and fifth in passing efficiency (154.9). Guidugli has thrown for 2,573 yards and 16 TD's, while passing for more than 300 yards on four occasions. Offensive lineman Kyle Takovitz, defensive lineman Andre Frazier and defensive back Doug Monoghan (100 tackles) were the Bearcats other selections.

UAB running back Theron Dudley is joined by offensive lineman Andy Galloway, linebacker Darrius Taylor and placekicker Nick Hayes on the All-Freshman squad, while tight end Bobby Hoover, defensive lineman Jay Ashton (four forced fumbles) and linebackers Tra Boger and Brandon Spincer (65 tackles) represent Tulane on the team.

Memphis placed three players on the All-Freshman team, followed by Louisville with two and East Carolina, Houston and TCU with one each.

Conference USA will announce its Freshman of the Year on Thursday, December 6.
