ITF: 2023 Championships Day One Recap

BIRMINGHAM – After the first day of the two-day 2023 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex, Rice leads on the men’s side while FIU is in front on the women’s with six events scored. 
The Rice men’s team posted 56.5 points, just ahead of second-place Charlotte (51 points), while the FIU women’s team scored 52.5 points to lead second-place Rice (35.5 points).

The championships will resume Sunday morning with the remaining heptathlon events commencing at 8:30 a.m. CT. The field events begin at 10 a.m. followed by the remainder of the running finals at 12 p.m. Day two will be livestreamed on CUSA TV for free.

The 2023 Indoor Track and Field Championships started off with the women’s pentathlon and the first portion of the men’s heptathlon. North Texas freshman Marta Sivina captured the 2023 pentathlon crown with 3639 points. In the heptathlon, four events were completed with UTSA senior Jack Turner leading the way into the final day of competition Sunday with 3245 points. 
In the field events, Rice junior Alex Slinkman won the men’s pole vault, clearing a C-USA meet record with a 5.39-meter vault. Rice’s Nick Hicks claimed the men’s weight throw crown for the third-straight year with a heave of 21.09m. UTSA’s Christiaan Le Roux, after a third-place finish in 2022, was named the men’s long jump champion with a 7.64m mark. UTEP sophomore Jakub Belik claimed the men’s high jump title after he cleared 2.14m. 
In the women’s pole vault, FIU had the top three finishers, led by sophomore Nicole Janse Van Rensburg, who won the title with a 4.17m jump. The women’s long jump was won by UTSA junior Oreoluwa Adamson after she jumped to a mark of 4.17m. Rice junior Tara Simpson-Sullivan broke her own school record and C-USA meet record to win the women’s weight throw title for the second-straight year after a throw of 22.18 meters. 
In the running events, Charlotte’s Nick Scudder ran a time of 13:59.56 in the men’s 5000 meters to win his third-straight C-USA title in the event. In the women’s 5000m, Charlotte’s Louise Lounes earned the title with a time of 16:40.97. Rice swept the distance medley relays as the men’s team of Elliot Metcalf, Dominik Skorjanc, Ronen Oosthuizen and Gus Gannon clocked in a time of 9:58. 01 and the women’s squad of Amelie AttenboroughSavannah SimmsTaigen Hunter-Galvan and Alyssa Balandran ran a time of 11:34.36.
