2022-23 C-USA WBB Postseason Awards (PDF)
DALLAS – Conference USA has announced its postseason Women’s Basketball All-Conference, All-Freshman, All-Defensive Teams along with the Superlative Awards (Newcomer, Sixth Player, Defensive, Freshman, Player and Coach). The C-USA awards are voted on by the league’s coaches, sports information directors and a media representative from each school.
UTSA’s
Jordyn Jenkins became the first Roadrunner student-athlete to be named Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Florida Atlantic’s
Aniya Hubbard, who won five Freshman of the Week awards this season, is the league’s Freshman of the Year. Middle Tennessee’s
Rick Insell and UTEP’s
Kevin Baker claim Co-Coach of the Year honors.
Jenkins led the league and ranked 12
th nationally in scoring (21.1), finishing with 612 total points on the season and breaking the UTSA single season program record. She ranked first in C-USA in field goal percentage (.494), including 13 games shooting at least 50 percent. She also landed second in the conference in rebounds per game, grabbing an average of 7.5 per contest.
Hubbard also became the first Florida Atlantic student-athlete to be tabbed Freshman of the Year. She ranked first among all C-USA freshman in scoring (14.1), field goal percentage (.467) and steals per game (2.6). The guard from Hoover, Ala., piled up 19 double-figure games in her rookie campaign.
Insell guided the Lady Raiders to one of the finest seasons in program history. MTSU set or tied the league records for conference wins (18), home conference wins (10) and road conference wins (8). For the second straight year, the Lady Raiders have claimed 25 wins while rattling off 16 straight wins over a vast stretch of the season. MTSU goes into the Conference USA Championships ranked No. 25 and was ranked as high as No. 21 AP Poll. Insell is the first coach from Middle Tennessee to be crowned Coach of the Year.
Baker led the Miners to one of the best regular seasons in the last decade, winning at least 19 games for the first time since 2014-15 and finishing as the No. 4 seed in the Conference USA Tournament. UTEP proved to be a tough out at home as they won their first six games in El Paso and finished with an 11-3 home mark. The Miners also were one of two teams to knock off MTSU in the regular season with a thrilling 65-62 win on home floor.
UTEP’s
Elina Arike was named the Defensive Player of the Year, making her the first Miner to bring home these honors. Arike recorded at least a block or a steal in all but three games this season while totaling 22 steals and 14 blocks this season. She also averaged 5.5 rebounds per contest for the Miners.
Middle Tennessee’s
Kseniya Malashka picked up the Sixth Player of the Year award for the second year in a row, the first time a student-athlete has done this since Gloria Brown of UTEP in 2011 and 2012. Malashka was the team’s leading scorer (15.4) while coming off the bench for the Lady Raiders in 26 of their 29 games. She also led the entire league in blocks per game (1.9).
