OTF: Multis Kicks Off Day One of C-USA Track and Field Championships

DENTON – The 2023 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up day one with four heptathlon and five decathlon events completed at the University of North Texas Track and Field Stadium. The four-day meet, hosted by North Texas, will conclude Sunday.

The 2022 C-USA decathlon champion Jack Turner of UTSA is currently atop of the leaderboard with 4,251 points. The two-time reigning champion took first place in two events, winning the long jump with a mark of 7.67 meters. In the 400-meter dash, he ran a time of 48.14 seconds which pushed him into first place overall. Rice’s Grant Levesque is in second place with 4,178, while UTSA’s Joel McFarlane is in third with 4,148 points.

Following the first four of seven events in the heptathlon, Eliza Kraule of Rice has the lead with 3,351 points. She tied for first place in the high jump with a mark of 1.76 meters and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.74. Rice’s Lindsay Simms is in second place with 3,210 points, and UTSA’s Sigrid Kleive is in third with 3,153 points. The field of 12 returns to the track on Friday at 4:30 p.m. to crown this year’s champion.

Friday kicks off with the first field event of the meet, men’s hammer, at 1 p.m. CT, with the women’s starting at 3 p.m. The multi-events also conclude, and the first running event, the women’s 10,000 meter, starts at 8 p.m. The men’s 10k will begin at 9 p.m.

Field events resume Saturday with the men’s discus at 1 p.m. CT. Running prelims begin with the women’s 1,500 meter at 5:30 p.m. The day concludes with the men’s and women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase, with the women starting at 9 p.m.

Sunday’s final day of action begins at 1 p.m. with the women’s shot put. The running finals will start at 6 p.m. with the men’s 4x100m relay. An awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of the 4x400m relay.
