OTF: Three Student-Athletes Earn First Team All-America Honors at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – Three Conference USA student-athletes earned first team All-America honors last weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. UTEP’s Victor Kibiego had a third-place podium finish in the 3,000m steeplechase. Rice’s Tara Simpson-Sullivan placed fifth in the hammer throw, while UTSA’s Jack Turner earned seventh place in the decathlon. 
 
Kibiego clocked a time of 8:32.49 to earn his first career All-America honor. Kibiego positioned himself as the top five runners for the first five laps, finishing behind BYU’s Kenneth Brooks and Montana State’s Duncan Hamilton. 
 
In the hammer throw, Simpson-Sullivan threw a 67.00m (219-10) on her fourth attempt to jump from eighth to fifth place. Simpson-Sullivan earned her second first team All-America honor and fifth overall. 
 
Turner scored the second-best total in program history with 7,851 points, earning seventh place in the decathlon. In the final event, Turner ran a personal best 4:33.47 in the 1500m race to solidify his first-team All-America honor finish.
