FB: Weekday CUSA Heats Up with Thrilling Tuesday Tilts

DALLAS – The third season of Weekday CUSA continues with a four-game slate on Tuesday and Wednesday, including a pair of key matchups of top squads on Tuesday with undefeated Kennesaw State visiting FIU at 6 p.m. CT and WKU (3-1) taking on LA Tech (2-1) at 6:30 p.m.

KENNESAW STATE (4-2, 2-0 CUSA) AT FIU (3-3, 1-1 CUSA)
Date: Tuesday, Oct. 21
Time: 6 p.m. CT
Location: Miami, Fla. (Pitbull Stadium)
Broadcast: ESPN2
Announcers: Clay Matvick (PxP), Chase Daniel (Analyst)
All-Time Series: Kennesaw State leads 1-0

While Vice Night has produced some of the best uniforms in the country over the past three seasons, it has not produced wins as the Panthers have lost each time since rolling out the theme in 2022. Coming off a staggering 25-6 upset of WKU, FIU looks to buck the trend against the Owls this time around. Kennesaw State is also fresh off a statement win after knocking off LA Tech, 35-7, prior to the bye week. The matchup is chock full of “immovable objects versus unstoppable forces” as both teams enter in the top 25 in red zone defense, and each team’s offensive specialty (FIU rushing, KSU passing) meets an equally stout defense, respectively.

WKU (5-2, 3-1 CUSA) AT LA TECH (4-2, 2-1 CUSA)
Date: Tuesday, Oct. 21
Time: 6:30 p.m. CT
Location: Ruston, La. (Joe Aillet Stadium)
Broadcast: CBS Sports Network
Announcers: Jack Gordon (PxP), Taylor McHargue (Analyst)
All-Time Series: Series tied 4-4

The two teams on the other side of the previously mentioned upsets each look to shake off their last outing and get back in the win column. The Hilltoppers were stymied in the pass game against FIU but look to get back on track against a struggling Bulldog pass defense that allowed 290 yards and four touchdowns to Kennesaw State. However, Maverick McIvor can’t afford the same mistakes against a disruptive LA Tech defense. For the Bulldogs, a key will be getting stops in the red zone as they sport the 10th-best red zone defense, while WKU has scored just four touchdowns in its last 10 red zone trips.

MTSU (1-5, 0-2 CUSA) AT DELAWARE (3-3, 1-2 CUSA)
Date: Wednesday, Oct. 22
Time: 6:30 p.m. CT
Location: Newark, Del. (Delaware Stadium)
Broadcast: ESPN2
Announcers: Jay Alter (PxP), Rocky Boiman (Analyst)
All-Time Series: Delaware leads 2-0

The Blue Raiders and Fightin’ Blue Hens square off for the first time in nearly half a century after Delaware swept a home-and-home back in 1977-78. Blue Hens quarterback Nick Minicucci is coming off a career game in which he threw for 422 yards, cementing himself as the CUSA leader in passing (299.0). He looks to help Delaware snap a two-game skid back in The Tub. On the other side, MTSU’s backfield duo of Nick Vattiato and Jekail Middlebrook have remained consistent during their losing streak and hope that continued success leads to wins. The Blue Raiders will also look to keep up the pressure against Minicucci and the Delaware offense after MTSU tallied four sacks and nine TFL against Missouri State.

MISSOURI STATE (3-3, 1-1 CUSA) AT NEW MEXICO STATE (3-3, 1-2 CUSA)
Date: Wednesday, Oct. 22
Time: 8 p.m. CT
Location: Las Cruces, N.M. (Aggie Memorial Stadium)
Broadcast: CBS Sports Network
Announcers: John Sadak (PxP), Patrick Peterson (Analyst)
All-Time Series: First meeting

Some late night Weekday CUSA action and the week nine finale will feature the first meeting of the Bears and Aggies. While Missouri State is hopeful for the return of quarterback Jacob Clark, the game should present an exciting quarterback matchup regardless of who starts for Missouri State between Clark and true freshman Deuce Bailey versus NM State’s Logan Fife. Both the Bears and Aggies have been among the most prominent big play offenses as NMSU ranks 12th in passes over 20 yards, while Mo State ranks 38th with 26. Following their third game this season with three turnovers forced, the Aggies usurped LA Tech as the leader in turnovers gained (13).
