TAMPA, FL ? The Florida Sea Dragons selected former University of South Florida men?s basketball standouts B.B. Waldon and Altron Jackson in the 17th annual United States Basketball League (USBL) Draft. The event was held via conference call from the league?s office in Milford, CT on Tuesday night. Waldon was taken with the seventh pick (17th pick overall) of the second round while Jackson was the third pick (53rd pick overall) in the draft?s sixth round. The ?Dynamic Duo? were two of seven players taken from Florida colleges and two of three taken from Conference USA schools. Charlotte?s Jobey Thomas was taken in the fourth round by the Oklahoma Storm.
?We?re extremely happy to see both B.B. and Altron get drafted by the Sea Dragons,? said USF head coach Seth Greenberg. ?B.B. playing in the USBL will depend on his health (whether or not he will need knee surgery) but what will help both players is the fact that they can both play more than one position and that they are very good defensively.?
Waldon finished his four-year career with the Bulls third on the all-time Conference USA scoring list with 1,869 points, which is also good enough for fourth on the schools all-time list. In addition the Lakeland, FL native is South Florida?s career rebounding leader (928) and is second on both the USF and C-USA career ledger?s with 215 steals. Waldon is the only player in conference history to surpass 1,800 career points, 900 career rebounds, and 200 career steals. During his time in the ?Green and Gold? he was a four-time All-Conference USA selection.
Jackson ended his South Florida career as the all-time leading scorer in Conference USA ? and second on the schools list ? netting 2,017 career points. He led the Bulls in scoring the past two seasons and was a three-time all-C-USA selection and a two-time Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year. A native of Sarasota, Jackson proved to be one of the most consistent scorers in college basketball recording double figure points in 100-of-122 career games and 86-of-94 games during the past three seasons. In addition to his offensive abilities Jackson was also dominating on the defensive end of the floor as well recording 181 career steals which is good enough for third on the career USF list and sixth on the all-time Conference USA ledger.
Jackson?s draft selection (sixth round) may come as a surprise to some, however it is customary for USBL teams to draft potential National Basketball Association (NBA) draft picks at the end of their draft so a selection is not used on a player who will not play for that particular organization. Jackson is projected to be take in one of the two rounds of the NBA Draft on June 26.
