UTEP Practice Q/A #8: Jeff Moturi

Aug. 13, 2008

How has camp been for you this year?

It's been going pretty good, especially for the receivers. The younger guys have been becoming comfortable with the offense. My whole goal was to get the younger guys on the ball because I can't get better without them improving too. They've done real well, and that will help us win games.

You had a great season in 2007. What are you looking to accomplish in 2008?

I'm just looking forward to keep doing what I do best. I just want to keep catching balls and making big plays to help the team. I also want to keep improving while helping the younger receivers get better too. It could be a tough year for me if the young guys don't improve. It'd be nice to have a couple more touchdowns and more catches, but I just want to do whatever I need to do to help us get the win.

How did you and Trevor Vittatoe develop such good chemistry so quickly last year?

That was the something we worked on during the offseason leading into the start of last year. We worked on throwing and catching every single day. We did a lot of different drills and got better.

What makes Trevor Vittatoe such a special quarterback?

He is so relaxed and humble. He's a smart learner who picks things up really fast. He knows how to stay patient and hits his target real well. It's great for our offense that he's only a sophomore because he's going to be here a long time and will only get better.

Who are some of the receivers whose names fans may not know now but will by the end of the season?

Kris Adams is going to be a sleeper. He has real good speed and quickness, catches the ball really well. Evan Davis will be a big play guy. Pierce Hunter has a big frame, big body with speed and has good hands. Tufick Shadrawy is going to make a bunch of big plays for us. All of those guys will be threats for us.

It looks like you're going to have the chance to return some punts this year. How do you feel about that?

It's going to be a good experience. I haven't done it since I was in high school, but I'm excited. I'm looking forward to getting back there and hopefully making some big plays.

You have a new wide receivers coach this year in Guy Holliday. How has he been to learn from?

He is a very intense coach. He wears you out and runs you, but it's just because he wants us to do all of the little things right. He wants us to focus on doing everything right, and that is what is going to help us get the win.

Why did you change from #18 to # 6 this year?

The number 18 wasn't winning enough games, had to mix it up. It's a new year, so I needed to have a new number. I had a talk with Jeremy Jones, and I asked him about wearing number six. He told me to do it and just to keep the legacy alive.

What will be the offense's approach in 2008?

We will be relaxed and looking to make more big plays. We will have a humble approach, but want to have fanatical effort and power. I'm looking forward to it.

You are a soft spoken individual, but you look like you enjoy practice. Talk about that

I try to keep things positive and to have fun in practice. I try to keep practice live. I'm not into pranks or stuff like that too much, but I can make my teammates laugh.

Where does the nickname "DBoy" come from?

It's from high school. There was myself and two other receivers. We decided we had to come up with nicknames. We decided to call ourselves the DBoys, because we were so deadly/talented. There was D Boy 1, D Boy 2 and I was D Boy 3. It just stuck with me.
