Swimming & Diving Completes Speedo Winter Championships With Eight Top-Five Finishes

Florida Atlantic University men's and women's swimming and diving concluded competition at the 24th Annual Speedo Winter Championships on Sunday taking home eight top-five finishes and setting 10 lifetime bests.

In the first final of the day, the 1650 freestyle, sophomore Bridget Belcik claimed first place with a final time of 17:44.71. Third place belonged to Emma Volz with a time of 18:07.31, and in fifth place was Sahra El-Hamaki coming in at 18:25.63.

The Owls had four women finish in the top 10 in the 200 IM. Megan Reuter was the top finisher, taking fourth place in 2:12.28. Laura Conoscenti came in fifth with a lifetime best time of 2:13.05. Jocelyn Williams and Diana Rodriguez followed coming in seventh and eighth, respectively. The men had three finishers in the top 10, with Aaron Custodio leading the pack with a fifth place finish and a career-best time of 1:56.82. Niels Sorenson took seventh in 1:57.52, and Zachary Kitzis had a personal best time of 1:58.07 to claim ninth.

In the men's 50 backstroke, Sorensen set a personal best of 24.67 and claimed third place. Cole Wisecarver and Tucker Lewis earned sixth and eighth place. They also set lifetime bests in the preliminary race for this event with times of 25.54 and 25.79, respectively.

Freshman Reuter had another top-five finish in the 50 breaststroke where she earned third place in 31.78. Williams took seventh place with a final time of 33.65. Freshmen Kyleigh Firman and Madison Gilbert were FAU's top finishers in the 50 butterfly earning seventh (27.18) and ninth (27.58).

The last event of the meet was the 100 freestyle. Carlee Jackson claimed eighth place with a time of 53.91. During preliminaries for the event, Firman and Belcik set career-highs with times of 55.01 and 55.20. Wisecarver was the top finisher for the men with a lifetime best time of 46.49, which earned him eighth place. Tanner Rogalski set a personal best in the preliminary race for the 100 free with a time of 48.81.

Swimming and diving will face Georgia Tech and Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. in Ft. Myers, Fla. The team will then return home to Boca Raton to host the FAU Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 20 beginning at 10 a.m.
