DALLAS – Conference USA unveiled Wednesday its 2019-20 women's golf all-conference awards voted on by the league's 12 head coaches. Charlotte had each of its starters selected featuring junior
Ashley Fowler as the C-USA Women's Golfer of the Year presented by Ready Nutrition, and Coach of the Year
Holly Clark. Florida Atlantic's
Justine Fournand became the program's second superlative award winner as the Freshman of the Year, and UAB senior
Tia Teiniketo was voted Most Improved Golfer.
Fowler and the 49ers posted an unforgettable season before it was shortened in March. The league's top golfer set a new school record with a 72.11 stroke average anchored by seven under-par rounds and four top-10 finishes in six events. A two-time C-USA Golfer of the Week, Fowler provided Charlotte's lowest scorecard in five of six tournaments. Her 18-hole program-record 66 in the first event of the year set the tone for a trio of consecutive top-five finishes to follow, including a tie for fourth to help secure the program's first-ever team title at the Yale Invitational. Fowler finished the year as the conference's highest-ranked golfer (87).
Fournand needed less than one full season to place herself at the peak of Florida Atlantic's record book. The France native now accounts for four of the eight lowest rounds in program history and her three eagles have already bested every all-time career total. Her program-record 72.90 stroke average was mounted by a single-season second-best nine par-or-better rounds out of 21 played. The newcomer became Florida Atlantic's 16
th individual tournament champion with a first-place showing at FIU's 42
nd Pat Bradley Invitational. Her 5-under 67 posted in the second round marked the second-lowest single-round performance in Owl history. Not only did the records make for a memorable first year, but Fournand also struck her first collegiate hole-in-one at the Florida Gators Invitational in March.
UAB's second Most Improved winner since 2016, Teiniketo sharpened her stroke average from 75.90 to a team-leading 72.90 in 2019-20. In UAB's six tournaments, the senior notched four top-10 finishes, including the USA Intercollegiate individual medal in the squad's season opener. Teiniketo's 12-under 204 (67-68-69) in the event marked a school record and resulted in the program's first team title since 2007. She also paced UAB to another medal at the Starmount Fall Classic two weeks later. Teiniketo turned in nine par-or-better rounds and landed at or under par in two tournaments on the year.
At the helm of the three-year-old Charlotte program, Clark continues build her young unit into a powerhouse. The 49ers captured their first pair of team titles at the Yale Invitational and Idle Hour Collegiate, and five top-five finishes in six tournaments this season. The team's five all-conference selections are the most by a single C-USA squad since 2016. Charlotte closed the campaign No. 27 in the Golfweek national rankings, No. 37 according to Golfstat, and reached as high as No. 7 during the fall schedule. The Niners also set new single-round and tournament records, both coming in a hot start at the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate. Charlotte recorded an 8-under 276 in the final round to earn second place with a total 17-under 835 through three days.
