MG: C-USA Releases All-Conference Teams

DALLAS – Conference USA revealed its 2019-20 men's golf all-conference awards Thursday. Charlotte collected four selections highlighted by C-USA Men's Golfer of the Year John Gough. UAB matched the total featuring Freshman of the Year Khavish Varadan and Phillip Hatchett Coach of the Year Mike Wilson. Twelve of C-USA's 13 teams are represented across the three all-conference and one all-freshman squads.

Gough is Charlotte's first-ever recipient of C-USA golf's top honor. The highest-ranked player in the league, Gough landed inside Golfstat's top 100 and became one of three student-athletes to earn PING All-Region recognition in 2019-20. The England native turned in four top-10 placements in seven events and received C-USA first-team recognition for the second year in a row. The 49ers ended the season ranked No. 48 in the nation as Gough paced Charlotte to three runner-up finishes. With a team-best 13 under-par rounds out of 21 played, Gough's 71.43 stroke average is the school's second-best mark all-time, improving his career 72.66 to third-lowest in program history. Gough was twice named C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week and was the only player to earn the award multiple times this year.

With Charlotte junior Ashley Fowler being named the C-USA Women's Golfer of the Year on Wednesday, this season marks the second year in a row C-USA's top superlative honorees have hailed from the same program.

Though the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilson's 2019-20 Blazers will stand as one of the best units in program history. The team finished top five in five of their six tournaments this year and was the highest-ranked in C-USA at No. 44 nationally. UAB registered its lowest stroke average ever at a collective 282.72 as three of its starters' averages ranked in the school's top 10 all-time.

Varadan emerged for the Blazers in his final three tournaments to become the top-ranking freshman in the league. The Malaysia native finished under par in three of six events to conclude his inaugural season with a 72.20 stroke average. Varadan's final scorecard improved with each event, polishing his season with a pair of 6-under showings at the White Sands Intercollegiate and Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate. Additionally, his performance earned him spots on the All-Conference USA Third Team and C-USA All-Freshman Team.
