RUSTON, La. – UAB junior
Nick Robillard captured his first collegiate individual medal and UAB won its first tournament of the 2020-21 season at Louisiana Tech’s Jim Rivers Intercollegiate this week. The Blazers have now won the event twice in the last three years.
UAB commanded the 12-team field by 14 strokes with a three-day total of 21-under 843 (284-275-284). The Squire Creek Club also hosted C-USA members Louisiana Tech and WKU, who placed fourth and 10
th, respectively.
The Blazers boasted three of the tournament’s top four finishers. Robillard paced the field by four strokes and carded a 9-under 207 (67-68-72). Seniors
William Walker III and
Drew Mathers both tied for third place at 4-under 212. C-USA’s reigning Freshman of the Year
Khavish Varadan posted a 69 in Tuesday’s final round to jump 13 spots and finish 17
th.
UAB ranked first in pars (204) and eagles (5) with Walker III firing a pair in the final round. Two Blazers also owned the sharpest Par-4 performances. Mathers averaged 2-under and Robillard followed at 1-under for the week.
UAB now turns its attention to the Scenic City Classic hosted by Chattanooga Sept. 21-22 at The Honors Course.
