MBB: Jan.4 Players of the Week

DALLAS – Charlotte sophomore guard Jahmir Young and Rice sophomore guard Travis Evee split Conference USA Player of the Week honors Monday following the league’s first weekend of conference action. Young collected his second award of the season, as did Southern Miss’ Jaron Pierre, Jr., who took home Freshman of the Week. C-USA weekly awards are voted on by the league's men's basketball communications directors.

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JAHMIR YOUNG, CHARLOTTE
SOPHOMORE, G, 6-2, 185, HYATTSVILLE, MD
Charlotte (5-4, 1-1 C-USA East) split its first C-USA series as the 49ers hosted (RV) WKU (8-3, 1-1 C-USA East) over the weekend. Young averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, five assists and two steals while connecting on six three-point field goals. The two-time C-USA Player of the Week has now recorded four-straight 20-point contests with six overall on the season. On Saturday, he turned in 24 points, grabbed a season-high-tying seven rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists in the 75-71 overtime win. The guard was also effective in the series lid-lifter with 23 points, six boards, three assists and three steals.

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TRAVIS EVEE, RICE
SOPHOMORE, G, 6-1, 165, RANDOLPH, MS
Evee helped Rice (8-2, 2-0 C-USA West) open C-USA play with a sweep of UTSA (4-5, 0-2 C-USA West) as he averaged 23 points and four assists. In a 95-86 victory on Friday, Evee had a record day, scoring a career-high 36 points, including 23 in the second half, on 13-of-19 from the floor. The 36 points were the most by an Owl since 2008. Evee connected on eight three-pointers to tie the school record that was set 23 years ago. The following day, he helped Rice earn an 84-69 win over the Roadrunners, scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting while recording four assists. Evee’s play helped Rice start C-USA play 2-0 for the first time since 2006-07.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
JARON PIERRE, JR., SOUTHERN MISS

FRESHMAN, G, 6-5, 185, NEW ORLEANS, LA
Pierre, Jr. earned his second weekly nod on the heels of Southern Miss’ (5-4, 1-1 C-USA West) series split versus UTEP (5-3, 1-1 C-USA West) in Hattiesburg. His biggest plays of the week, and the season, came in the Golden Eagles’ 7-0 run over the final 45 seconds to force overtime and defeat the Miners on Friday. His stand-up defense forced UTEP out-of-bounds with 19 seconds left, and in the following play he took a give-and-go for the game-tying layup. The win was one of two on the week as the team also picked up a 74-54 nonconference decision over Loyola on Monday. The newcomer averaged 12.7 points and three rebounds, and also pitched in six assists and four steals on the week.
