MBB: Florida Atlantic Earns No. 9 Seed, Set to Face Memphis in NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – Making just its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history, Florida Atlantic earned the No. 9 seed in the East Region and will face American Athletic Conference tournament champion Memphis in the first round.
 
FAU received the highest seed by a C-USA squad since Memphis earned a No. 6 seed in 2013. The Owls (31-3) and Tigers (26-8) will square off at 8:20 p.m. CT Friday inside Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The game will be shown nationally on TNT.
 
Florida Atlantic captured its first C-USA Basketball Championship title with a commanding 78-56 win over No. 3 UAB on Saturday night in the final contest of the 2023 C-USA Basketball Championships presented by TotalCare.
 
Alijah Martin, a First-Team All-C-USA selection, was named the tournament MVP after he capped off his week with 30 points in Saturday's contest, the most by an individual in a C-USA Basketball Championship final.
 
He averaged 18.7 points and eight rebounds per game over three games in the tournament and shot 43 percent from three-point range during the Owls’ run. Martin averaged 13.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this season.
 
The Owls boast a balanced attack that includes six players averaging at least seven points and seven players with at least 47 assists on the year. C-USA Sixth Man of the Year Johnell Davis leads the way in scoring with 13.5 points per game this season.
 
FAU is led by C-USA Coach of the Year Dusty May, who orchestrated a record-shattering campaign in Boca Raton that saw the program claim its first C-USA regular-season title. The Owls won a program-record 31 games and a league-record 18 games in conference play.
 
Memphis is coming off an upset of No. 1 Houston in the American Athletic Conference tournament title game. The Tigers’ leading scorer, Kendric Davis (22.1 PPG), dropped 31 points en route to AAC Tournament MVP honors.
