DALLAS – Middle Tennessee’s
Stijn Slump was named the 2023 Conference USA Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, announced by the league office on Wednesday. This marks Slump’s second Player of the Year honor in as many years and the fourth straight season for a Blue Raider. He will represent MTSU in the singles portion of the NCAA Championships that takes place in Orlando, Florida beginning on May 22.
UTSA head coach
Sergey Avdeyev earned Coach of the Year for the first time since taking over the reins in San Antonio. Avdeyev led the Roadrunners to an 18-6 record which marks the most wins since 1985 and carried a program-best 14 consecutive wins from Feb. 17 to April 23. The Roadrunners never dropped below the top 50 in the ITA rankings and were up to as high as No. 34 this spring. UTSA earned an at-large bid in the NCAA Championships and will face No. 37 Pepperdine in the first round in Austin, Texas.
Middle Tennessee’s
Ondrej Horak was named Freshman of the Year. He boasts a 19-4 overall record while winning four straight singles matches and holds the most wins on the squad in singles. Horak collected a straight set singles win on court No. 4 to help lead MTSU past UTSA in the C-USA Championship final.
Florida Atlantic’s
Alberto Colas was named Newcomer of the Year. Colas owns an 8-9 overall record while going 4-1 on court No. 1 for the Owls. He breezed through the C-USA Quarterfinals with a 6-2 doubles win with partners Hunter Robbins. Colas then won in straight sets in his singles match on court No. 1. The graduate student ended his campaign on a three-match win streak all on court No. 1 and was on a win streak with two of his three doubles partners.
Middle Tennessee’s
Pavel Motl was named Outstanding Singles Player of the Championship after capturing the second most singles victories on the team with a 17-5 mark. Motl swept both of his matches in the semifinals and final over UAB 6-2, 6-2 and UTSA 6-1, 6-2 to help bring the Blue Raiders their fourth straight C-USA title.
Ondrej Horak and
Marcel Kamrowski of Middle Tennessee earned Outstanding Doubles Team of the Championship. The freshman duo holds a 7-4 overall record in doubles and had both of their point clinching wins in the C-USA semifinals and final on court No. 3.

Alan Magadan and
Sebastian Rodriguez will represent UTSA in the doubles portion of the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Florida. This marks the first duo from UTSA to compete in the championship in program history as they are set to face No. 18 Jeremie Casabon and Siim Troost from Vanderbilt.
