DALLAS – MTSU’s
Karim Al-Amin was named the 2025 Conference USA Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, announced by the league office on Tuesday. This marks Al-Amin’s first Player of the Year honor and the sixth straight season for a Blue Raider. In singles, he owns a 13-11 mark primarily on court No. 1. In doubles, Al-Amin and his partner Ondrej Horak are currently ranked No. 58, boasting a 17-14 record on court No. 1 in the 2024-25 seasons.
MTSU head coach
Jimmy Borendame earned Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his 15 years at the helm in Murfreesboro. Borendame has led the Blue Raiders to a 16-11 record with a schedule that saw 11 Power Four opponents. The Blue Raiders head man guided his 48
th-ranked squad to a sixth straight CUSA title. MTSU earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships and will face No. 16 Duke in the first round in Knoxville, Tenn.
Kacper Szymkowiak of MTSU was named Freshman of the Year despite fighting an injury in the back half of the 2025 campaign. The rookie from Wroclaw, Poland, set a Blue Raider program record as he went on to win his first 11 matches to begin his career. Szymkowiak sports a 12-2 record in singles with a 4-0 mark on court No. 2 and No. 5. The true freshman compiled victories over opponents from Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Indiana and Oklahoma State.
Jax State’s
David Krasner claimed Newcomer of the Year honors after posting a team-best 12-4 overall record in singles, playing primarily in the No. 4 position. The Wagner University transfer helped lead the Gamecocks to a 12-7 overall mark and a 58-36 singles record as a squad. The sophomore from Staten Island ended the regular season on a six-match win streak including wins over UAB, Kennesaw State and Georgia State.
MTSU’s
Ondrej Horak was named Outstanding Singles Player of the Championship after going 2-0 during the championship with a straight set win on court No. 2 in the title match. The junior bested Kennesaw State’s Anthony Weingarten by retirement (6-0) in the semifinals on Friday and then followed that performance with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over Liberty’s Carl Roothman in the championship final.
Shu Matsuoka and
Igor Mandou Berranger of MTSU earned Outstanding Doubles Team of the Championship. The duo went 2-0 at the CUSA Championship on court No. 3 as they helped secure the doubles point in the semifinals and title match. The pair defeated Kennesaw State’s Sam Baldwin and Erik Vladimirov 6-2 in the semifinals and handled business in the title match with a 6-3 victory over Liberty’s Ernst Gouws and Matija Samardzic.
