Houston's three straight one-run victories over UAB allowed the Cougars to move into a first place tie with Southern Miss in the C-USA standings. East Carolina, which has won all four of its conference series' is just a game behind them with an 8-4 league mark. USM's Jeff Cook and Memphis' Jarrett Grube have earned Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors. Catch up with all of the C-USA baseball news in this week's notebook.


HITTER OF THE WEEK
JEFF COOK, SOUTHERN MISS
Senior, OF, Hattiesburg, Miss.
Cook batted .471 (8-for-17) with a 1.235 slugging percentage last week, leading the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 record on the road. His solo home run in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the game-winner in 1 3-1 victory at Southeastern Louisiana on April 2. Cook then opened the series at Cincinnati by tying school and conference record with three home runs in a 15-8 win. Cook finished the week with one double, four homers, eight RBI and six runs scored. He also walked twice to close out the week with a .526 on-base percentage.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
JARRETT GRUBE, MEMPHIS
Junior, RHP, Coronna, Ind.
After being scratched from his normal weekend start due to an ankle injury, Grube ended up coming out of the bullpen in the top of the second inning of Saturday's second game vs. TCU with the Tigers trailing, 3-0. He proceeded to throw 7 2/3 innings of relief without allowing an earned run. Grube struck out nine and walked just one to earn the victory in Memphis' 5-4 comeback win.



C-USA NOTEBOOK
CHARLOTTE
The 49ers won their second straight Conference USA series over the weekend, taking two of three from Tulane at Kannapolis, N.C., winning the series with the Green Wave for the second straight season. Charlotte took the series by winning a 4-1 decision in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. In that game, the 49ers batted around in the fourth inning, scoring four runs without getting a hit. JUSTIN BROWN threw his first career complete game to get the win, not allowing an earned run. He struck out seven and walked just two, while scattering four hits. ZACHARY TREADWAY won his third straight C-USA game on Friday night, striking out seven over 8 1/3 innings to improve to 4-2 on the year. BRAD ERWIN became the second Niner to hit two home runs in a game this season when he went deep twice in Friday night's 8-6 win.

CINCINNATI
Senior RHP B.J. BORSA made history once again in his most recent start against Southern Miss on April 5, as he tied the Conference USA record for most career complete games with 12. In addition to the C-USA mark, Borsa has etched his name throughout the UC record books holding the school career marks for most games started (54) and innings pitched (328.1). Borsa's win on Saturday gives him 18 for his career, tying him for third, but just one victory away from matching Tim Burman and Curtus Moak's record of 19. In addition, Borsa is third in career strikeouts (251) and can move into second place with five more punchouts. Bill Faul is the current leader with 295. JAKE SMITH and AARON MOLL both came to life last week, hitting .667 and .375 respectively for the week. Smith went 10 for 15 in for games, knocking in four runs to raise his batting average to a season-high .261. Moll clubbed three home runs, including two in a game and knocked in eight runs, upping his average to .183, the highest that it has been since late February.

EAST CAROLINA
The Pirates have won all four of their Conference USA series' after taking two-of-three at South Florida this past weekend. East Carolina won the first game of the series, 5-4 in 15 innings. It matched the longest game in Pirate history, equaling a 1979 win against North Carolina. DARRYL LAWHORN and RYAN NORWOOD both rank among C-USA's leaders in home runs. Lawhorn is tied for the lead with 10, while Norwood is tied for fifth with eight. The Pirates have hit at least one home run in 12 of the last 14 outings. Saturday's 11-4 loss at USF marked the first time this season that the Pirates had lost when recording 10 or more hits (the Pirates had 15). ECU is 13-1-1 this season when reaching double-figure hits.

HOUSTON
The Cougars won three straight one-run games vs. UAB to move into a tie for first place in Conference USA with a 9-3 league record. Seven of Houston's first 12 league games have been decided by one run, with UH owning a 5-2 record in those games. The Cougars have now won 16 of 17 vs. UAB and the sweep was the 28th for UH in seven C-USA seasons. The Cougar pitching staff boasts three players with ERAs under 2.30 - reliever RYAN WAGNER (1.86) and starters DANNY ZELL (1.95) and BRAD SULLIVAN (2.27). Zell earned his team-leading seventh win of the season in Saturday's 2-1 win, allowing only one unearned run off five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. Wagner now has eight saves this season, which is the third-highest single-season total in school history. In Conference USA play, Houston has a team ERA of 2.53, with 123 strikeouts in 109 innings.

LOUISVILLE
The Cardinals dropped two-of-three to Saint Louis this past weekend, as the three games between the teams were decided by a total of four runs. In the series opener on Friday, SCOTT BARBER recorded his third double-figure strikeout game of the seasons, fanning 10 Billiken batters. He has 62 strikeouts on the season, with just 13 walks, over 56 2/3 innings pitched. DAVE WILLIAMS, JR. had a streak of 24 straight steals without getting caught snapped on Sunday. He is 37-of-42 in his career, which ranks fifth all-time at U of L. He was the Cards top hitter last week, going 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles and six runs scored. CARLOS FERNANDEZ has made 63 career appearances, which is tied for eighth all-time. Louisville has three players that have made more than 80 consecutive starts: JOSH BOLEN (86), MORGAN BOJORQUEZ (89) and J.T. LA FOUNTAIN (83).

MEMPHIS
The Tigers won their first Conference USA series of the year this past weekend, taking two-of-three from TCU in the first meeting between the teams since the 1994 NCAA Tournament in Stillwater, Okla. Junior JOSH PAYNE batted .461 (6-for-13) last week with four home runs and 11 RBI. His week was highlighted by a 3-for-3 outing against Tennessee-Martin in which all three of his hits were home runs. He set a new school record with eight RBI in a 24-1 win. Coming into that game, he had two homers and six RBI in 27 games on the season. Catcher KELLY EDMUNSON became the second Tiger this season to record four hits in a game with four vs. UT-Martin. The freshman reserve is now 8-for-16 (.500) on the season. Junior RHP JARRETT GRUBE has a team-high 39 strikeouts on the year, including 29 in Conference USA play.

SAINT LOUIS
The Billikens claimed their first road wins of the season en route to their first C-USA series victory, going 2-1 at Louisville last weekend. Senior right-hander BEN HUTTON easily had his best outing of the season at Louisville, allowing just five hits and striking out six in eight innings of work. Suffered the loss despite allowing the Cardinals to hit just .167 with runners on base and just one two-out hit. Freshman JOHNNY SWEENEY stepped up his offensive production last week, hitting .500 in four starts to raise his average 60 points. He had a career day with a 3-for-4 performance in the series finale at Louisville. Senior left-hander JAKE BAUMGARTNER continued his recent success, adding his second-straight C-USA win at Louisville Friday night. In his first appearance in the No. 1 starter position, Baumgartner scattered eight hits and struck out five in seven innings of work.

SOUTH FLORIDA
The Bulls split four games last week, but dropped two of three at home to East Carolina in league action. USF fell to 0-4 in extra-inning affairs in the series opener against the Pirates, losing 5-4 in 15 innings. The Bulls have now dropped nine consecutive games in extra innings. Five Bulls rank among the top nine doubles leaders in C-USA including senior CF MIKE CUNNINGHAM who has a career-high 14. Four players have a dozen doubles. Senior RHP DAVID AUSTEN earned his league-leading seventh victory, allowing one run in seven innings in Saturday's win; he improved to 10-0 in 10 career home starts and he is 11-1 in 16 career starts overall. Junior RHP JOEY LIVINGSTON collected his career-high eighth save, preserving USF's win over UCF last Tuesday before working a career-high 5 1/3 innings out of the bullpen against ECU Friday; his 15 career saves are tied on No. 5 on USF's all-time list. Junior SS MYRON LESLIE homered for the second time this season Friday and sophomore RF BRYAN HIERLMEIER hit his career-high and team-high fourth Sunday as the Bulls fell to 9-6 in games they homer in.

SOUTHERN MISS
The Golden Eagles are in a first place tie in the C-USA standings after taking two of three at Cincinnati this past weekend. Southern Miss is batting .318 as a team (second in Conference USA) and have scored a league-high 246 runs (7.7 per game). The Golden Eagles have hit 70 doubles and 40 home runs, putting them on pace to exceed last season's totals of 128 doubles and 54 homers. Senior OF JEFF COOK is tied for the conference lead in home runs this season with 10. His four homers last week gave him 37 in his career, moving him into sixth place on the school's all-time list. CLINT KING hit .412 last week with two doubles and his 10th home run of the season. JASON LOWERY hit .375 last week, which included a 5-for-5 performance in the series opener at Cincinnati. Sophomore RHP CLIFF RUSSUM threw his second straight complete game victory at Southeastern Louisiana on April 2, giving up one run on three hits, walking three and striking out nine. He has 22 strikeouts and just three walks in his last two outings.

TCU
The Horned Frogs dropped two-of-three at Memphis this past weekend. The losses marked the first time that TCU has lost back-to-back Conference USA series' in its two seasons in the league. Both of TCU's wins last week were 8-0 shutouts, vs. Southwest Texas on April 1 and at Memphis last Saturday. It was the first time that the Frogs recorded two shutouts in a week since April, 2002, both in a series vs. Saint Louis. Relief pitcher PATRICK NEWBURn was part of both shutouts, allowing just one hit in two innings of work. Senior OF TERRY TROFHOLZ batted .400 last week with two doubles and his first home run of the season. Senior 3B MIKE SETTLE returned from a battle with food poisoning to record a hit in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, tied for the longest on TCU this year.

TULANE
The Green Wave's road struggles continued over the weekend, dropping two of three at Charlotte. Junior 1B MICHAEL AUBREY leads the Green Wave with a .477 batting average, eight home runs and 46 RBI, while senior CF JONNY KAPLAN is next with a .371 mark, five homers and 27 RBI. Junior shortstop TONY GIARRATANO, sophomore second baseman TOMMY MANZELLA and freshman right fielder BRIAN BOGUSEVIC are all hitting above .300 for the year with averages of .353, .336 and .325, respectively. Freshman LHP J.R. CROWEL improved to 5-0 with the win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Charlotte. He has an ERA of 2.85 and has struck out 36 batters with just 15 walks. The Wave are the top hitting team In Conference USA at .327 and have swiped a league-high 70 bases.

UAB
After winning their first six games this season decided by one run, the Blazers dropped three consecutive one-run games at Houston over the weekend. After playing 19 of its first 20 games at home, UAB embarked on a long road swing, beginning with the April 1 trip where the team faced fifth-ranked Mississippi State. Thirteen of UAB?s 17 games in April will be played on the road. Other teams included in the road stretch are sixth-ranked Auburn, No. 20 Alabama, No. 23 Southern Miss, Tulane, Houston and Birmingham-Southern. The Blazer pitching staff holds a 3.44 ERA and is holding
opponents to a .231 batting average.

LAST WEEK' S STARS
Other than the players of the week, here's a look at some of the top performances in Conference USA during the games of April 1-6:

HITTING
CHA - THOMAS BOWKER - hit .400 (6-for-15) with a hit and an RBI in each of four games. Had a double and a home run in game two vs. Tulane.
CIN - BRAD DORRMANN - hit .550 (11-for-20) last week, including back-to-back four hit games. Had two doubles, a home run and five RBI.
ECU - RYAN NORWOOD - went 3-for-5 in series finale win at USF with a home run. Slugged .812 in four games, doubling twice on the week and homering once.
HOU - BRIAN MARTIN- blasted a walk-off, solo home run to give UH a series sweep over UAB on Sunday.
MEM - JOSH PAYNE - went 6-for-13 (.461) last week. Surpassed his previous season totals with three homers and eight RBI vs. Tennessee-Martin. The eight RBI are a new school record.
SLU - DON ROGERS - helped SLU to a series win at Louisville with a 4-for-4 performance on Sunday that included a three-run homer and a double.
USF - MIKE CUNNINGHAM - hit .524 (11-for-21) in four games last week. Was 10-for-16 (.625) vs. ECU with six doubles. Had a .810 slugging percentage and .545 on-base percentage for the week .

PITCHING
CHA - JUSTIN BROWN - earned a complete-game victory vs. Tulane on Sunday, allowing zero earned runs on four hits, with seven strikeouts and two walks.
CIN - B.J. BORSA - notched another complete game, holding USM to three runs on seven hits, while fanning eight and walking only two.
ECU - GLEN TUCKER - threw 7 1/3 innings of scoreless relief at USF on Friday, allowing four hits and striking out six. Also had a save against Duke last Wednesday.
HOU - RYAN WAGNER - made two appearances against UAB and struck out all seven batters he faced to earn saves in both appearances.
LOU - ZACHJACKSON - picked up a midweek win at Evansville and threw a complete-game victory vs. SLU. Allowed one run on three hits over 12 innings, while fanning eight and walking three.
USF - DAVID AUSTEN - Improved to 7-1 with a strong seven innings against ECU Saturday. Allowed one run on nine hits, striking out five without walking a batter.
USM - RAY ANTONELLI - was credited with both victories at Cincinnati. In 6 1/3 combined innings, he allowed no runs on one hit with six K's and one walk.
TCU - CLAYTON JEROME - struck out a career-high 12 batters in a shutout win at Memphis. Faced the minimum amount of batters for seven innings, allowing one hit and one walk.


POWERFUL PITCHING
Conference USA has five schools that have team ERAs below 4.00. East Carolina leads the way with a 3.04 mark, followed by Houston (3.43), UAB (3.44), Tulane (3.65) and south Florida (3.95). Four other schools (Southern Miss, TCU, Louisville and Charlotte have team ERAs that are lower than 5.00. Nine of the league's 12 staffs have more than 200 strikeouts, led by Houston with 288.

THREE C-USA CATCHERS NAMED TO JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST
Three Conference USA catchers have been named to the official watch list for the 2003 Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top catcher. Devin Ivany of South Florida is joined by Brad Willcutt of Southern Miss and Brian Bormaster of Tulane among the 32 players on the list. The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists by May 20. 2003 NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
On February 11, Tulane's JONNY KAPLAN became the first Conference USA player to earn National Player of the Week honors this season. On March 3, UAB pitcher LUCAS TROTTER joined Kaplan in receiving national recognition. In 2002, six different C-USA players earned National Player of the Week honors.

2003 C-USA TOURNAMENT
The 2003 Conference USA Baseball Tournament will be held May 21-25 in New Orleans, La. Tulane University will serve as host for the event, which will be played at Turchin Stadium on Tulane's campus. The top eight regular season finishers qualify for the double-elimination tournament, with the champion receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The championship game on Sunday, May 25 will be televised by affiliates of the Conference USA Television Network. East Carolina is the defending tournament champion.
