In the Billikens' first victory over the Cougars since 1998, he gave up only one earned run and struck out five in a career-high nine innings pitched. He finished the week with a 0.82 ERA, while striking seven.
CHARLOTTE
The 49ers won two-of-three at Louisville this past weekend. Junior C RANDALL POPLIN and freshman OF SPENCER STEEDLEY each hit two home runs in Saturday's 13-8 win. They are the fourth and fifth different 49ers players to hit two homers in a game this season. Steedley set new career highs in that game with four hits and five RBI. As a team, Charlotte now has 51 round-trippers on the year, five more than they hit all of last year. The 49ers rank third in Conference USA in home runs. Senior RHP JUSTIN BROWN had his best outing of the season in Friday night's game at Louisville, throwing 7 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits, while striking out seven.
CINCINNATI
Senior AARON MOLL continued his climb up UC's career home run and RBI charts with his performance against East Carolina. Moll's two home runs give him 21 for his career, moving him into a four-way tie for 13th place in school history, sharing the spot with current teammate STEVE PICKERELL among others. Moll's four RBI give him 112 for his career and slide him into the 13th position. Sophomore JACK NELSON is batting .500 (31-for-62) since March 27, a span of 14 games, to raise his average to .384. During the stretch, Nelson has picked up six doubles and two home runs, while driving in 14. Included in the span was a five-hit game against East Carolina on Friday, the most by a UC player in nearly two years. The Bearcats have recorded double-digit hits in five consecutive games, including a season-high 18 on Saturday vs. East Carolina.
EAST CAROLINA
East Carolina scored 60 runs in a three-game sweep at Cincinnati, including a Conference USA record 32 in Saturday's 32-14 win. The Pirates set new school and C-USA single game records for runs (32), RBI (32) and at-bats (58) while setting a new school record for hits (34) falling one hit shy of the league record in that game. Senior JAMIE PAIGE went 7-for-8 with four runs scored and five RBI in the game two victory. Paige broke school and conference records in hits (7) and doubles (4) in a single game. The Pirates continue to lead C-USA in home runs having hit 73 on the season. As a team, the Pirates are hitting .375 in conference play with 43 of the 73 homers coming in conference play.
HOUSTON
The Cougars won their third consecutive C-USA series, taking two of three at Saint Louis. Friday's 4-3 loss ended an 18-game winning streak by Houston over the Billikens, dating back to 1998. Two UH hurlers made their first collegiate starts in the series and both emerged victorious. Sophomore RHP KEVIN ROBERTS struck out six and allowed just two runs on three hits over six innings on Saturday, while sophomore RHP AUSTIN SUMERLIN held SLU to two hits over four scoreless innings while working on a pitch count. Junior SS STUART MUSSLEWHITE hit safely in all four games last week to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Senior DH BRETT COOLEY hit his sixth homer of the season and the 25th of his career on Saturday. He is now tied with Bruce Rios (1996-99) for fifth place on the school's all-time home run list.
LOUISVILLE
The Cardinals won the series opener with Charlotte on Friday with a two-run rally in the bottom-of-the-ninth before dropping the final two games of the series. In that win, a solo pinch hit home run by freshman IF LOGAN JOHNSON tied the game and an RBI single by freshman SS CHRIS CATES won the game. In Sunday's series finale, senior RF MARK JURICH hit a pair of home runs. He reached base in every trip to the plate in the series, going 6-for-12 with six walks. Freshman RHP SCOTT JENKINS retired all 10 batters that he faced on Sunday. Sophomore 2B NICK HALEY is out indefinitely with a knee sprain. He had started 90 consecutive games before the injury.
MEMPHIS
The Tigers snapped a nine-game losing streak to Southern Miss with their 5-4 victory over the Golden Eagles in the series finale Sunday. It was also the first win for Memphis in Hattiesburg since 1996. The Tigers belted four home runs in the victory, including a two-run shot by rightfielder JORDAN HART in the seventh that proved to be the difference in the game. Righthander BILL EDWARDS is 2-0 in three league starts with a 1.89 ERA. Shortstop BRENT DLUGACH had his career-long hitting streak of 13 games halted in Sunday's victory. Dlugach leads the team with a .404 average in C-USA games. The Tigers continue their five-game swing through the Magnolia State with a pair of midweek contests at Mississippi State (Tues., and Wed., at 6:30 p.m.).
SAINT LOUIS
The Billikens snapped a pair of long losing streaks last week with wins over Southeast Missouri and Houston. Saint Louis had not beaten SEMO since 2001 and had not posted a win over UH in their previous 18 meetings. Senior RHP DAVE GUNTORIUS became the first Billiken in two years to earn C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors after picking up a save against SEMO and the win over Houston. Senior 1B DREW EDER, who was 3-for-4 in Sunday's series finale, has a team-high eight multiple RBI games this season. Sophomore OF JON GUYRE has started the last four games in right field and he scored the game-winning run in Friday night's victory over Houston. He now ranks fourth in the conference in RBI with 44. TCU's young squad played good defense at USF, playing error-free ball in two outings and making just one miscue in the other game.
TULANE
The Green Wave dropped three of four games last week, including their first-ever series loss to UAB. Tulane won a wild series opener, 17-13 as sophomore CF NATHAN SOUTHARD went 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI.
