DALLAS – No. 17 Southern Miss claimed the Conference USA regular season title, making the nationally ranked Golden Eagles the No. 1 seed at the 2022 Conference USA Baseball Championship, presented by The First, at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, May 25-29. 

Alongside host Southern Miss, who rose as high as No. 4 nationally in the D1Baseball poll, second  seed Louisiana Tech, third seed Old Dominion and seventh seed Charlotte also made appearances in the Top 25 of the major polls this season, showcasing the depth of this year’s tournament field.

The Championship features the top eight teams in regular-season league play. The format is two double-elimination brackets, with four teams each, with the winners of each bracket meeting in a single-elimination championship game. Old Dominion is the defending champion, while host and top seed Southern Miss has won three of the last five tournaments. The 2020 C-USA Baseball Championship was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. CT on Wednesday, May 25, when No. 3 seed Old Dominion battles No. 6 seed Middle Tennessee. The Monarchs took two-of-three from the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro in March.

Wednesday’s second game features No. 2 seed Louisiana Tech against No. 7 seed Charlotte. The Bulldogs closed the regular season with six wins in its final eight games and will face a 49ers squad that won 16 of its last 20. The pair met in the final weekend of the regular season, as LA Tech took two-of-three in Charlotte to lock up the second seed and secure this matchup.

The tournament’s top seed, regular season champion and host, Southern Miss will play the 4 p.m. CT game in front of its home crowd, matching up with No. 8 seed UAB. The Blazers were one of just two teams to win a conference series against the Golden Eagles in 2022, besting Southern Miss two-of-three in Birmingham April 29-May 1.

Opening day action will conclude with No. 4 seed Florida Atlantic taking on No. 5 seed UTSA. Two of three teams to finish 19-11 in league play, the Owls took down the Roadrunners in Boca Raton in late March, winning the final two games of the series, which factored into the final seeding process.
 
The 2022 C-USA Championship, presented by The First, will be played at a member home site for the second straight season, and the 18^th time in league history. The Championship Game on Sunday, May 29, at 1 p.m. CT, will be nationally-televised by CBS Sports Network, while all other games will be available on ESPN+.
