DALLAS – Conference USA announced Tuesday its first edition of Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the fall campaign, presented by
Blenders Eyewear. Florida Atlantic’s
Jessica Lambert was named the women’s track athlete, while UTSA sophomore
Oreoluwa Adamson earned the field honor this week. On the men’s side, Middle Tennessee’s
Alaba Akintola earned the honor for track, while UTSA’s long jumper,
Christiaan Le Roux picked up the first field award of the season.
C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Week- Jessica Lambert, Florida Atlantic, Jr., Croydon, England
Lambert competed in the Blazer Invite and Vulcan Invite and won the 500 meters. She also broke the Florida Atlantic program record, with a time of 1:14.20. In addition, Lambert finished in fourth place in the 400m with a time of 57.47 and was part of the third place 4x400 relay team with a split of 56.164 and a combined total time of 3:52.86.
C-USA Female Field Athlete of the Week- Oreoluwa Adamson, UTSA, So., London, England
Adamson leaped to gold in the long jump at the season-opening Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational last Friday in Houston. The sophomore from London, England, measured 6.10 meters (20-0.25) on her first trip down the runway and held on for the victory just ahead of All-America teammate Ingeborg Gruenwald, who secured silver. Adamson moved into the No. 5 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list, and her league-leading mark currently ranks 16th nationally.
C-USA Male Track Athlete of the Week- Alaba Akintola, Middle Tennessee, Sr., Ondo, Nigeria
Akintola ran at the Commodore Challenge this weekend hosted by Vanderbilt, running in both the 60 meter and 200 meters. In the 200-meter final, Alaba ran a time of 21.19 seconds to take first place, which ranks 19th in the nation and first in C-USA. In the 60-meter prelims, he ran a time of 6.70 seconds and took first. In the 60-meter finals, Akintola ran a time of 6.59 seconds to take first place. His new personal-best time of 6.59 is a top-five time in the nation and is first in conference. 6.59 seconds also is the new program-record and replaces a 20-year-old record set by Mardy Scales.
C-USA Male Field Athlete of the Week- Christiaan Le Roux, UTSA, So., Roodepoort, South Africa
Le Roux opened the 2023 indoor campaign with a win in the long jump at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational in Houston. The sophomore All-American from South Africa was in third place entering the sixth and final round after posting a mark of 7.43 meters (24-4.5) on his fourth try. Following a 7.37m (24-2.25) measurement in the fifth round, he moved into first place with a leap of 7.54m (24-9), passing Lamar's Kenson Tate (7.48m/24-6.5) and teammate
Gabriel Binion, who placed third with a 7.47m (24-6.25) mark. Le Roux became the program's No. 4 all-time performer in the event, this mark leads C-USA and ranks 23rd nationally.
