OTF: Eight Champions Crowned on Day Two of Championships

EL PASO, Texas – The 2024 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships resumed competition and had eight champions crowned on Saturday at UTEP’s Larry K. Durham Track at Kidd Field.
 
Although tomorrow determines all, Sam Houston continues to hold the lead on the men’s side after nine of the 21 events. The Bearkats racked up 85 points with Liberty sneaking up to them as the Flames gather 84. Liberty shepherds the women’s squad with a two-day total of 93.5 points. FIU is second with 58 points and New Mexico State in third with 47 points.
 
Championship Central
 
To kick off day two of the championships, the men’s decathlon resumed with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. In the grueling Texas heat, the athletes held strong throughout the morning. Liberty’s Anthony Bryan was crowned champion (6,533 points) after a win in discus and second place finishes in the hurdles, pole vault and javelin. UTEP’s Oleksandr Blonskyi (6,469) and Jalen Cadet (6,035) earned silver and bronze, respectively.
 
Heptathlon champion Patasha Bryan of Liberty finished strong as she claimed victory in the javelin (40.58m) and 800m (2:17.10) to collect a total of 5,371 points. FIU’s Fabiola Declet won today’s heptathlon 200m (24.40) and long jump (5.67m), but it was not enough to launch her to the top as she earned her second silver medal of the week with 5,236 points. WKU’s Netanya Linares also made the podium with 4,917 points.
 
Liberty grabbed 21 points from the men’s hammer throw. John Hicks earned the title (65.81m), Kellen Kimes received bronze (60.50m) and Desmond Coleman placed fourth. Sam Houston’s Brian Orlando recorded a best mark of 64.34m to claim silver in the hammer.
 
Flame Paola Bueno garnered gold in the women’s hammer, registering a throw of 63.59m. FIU’s Michaelle Valentin was tabbed second at 61.72m.
 
Holding the best mark in CUSA this season in the men’s high jump, UTEP’s Jakub Belik leaped just .02m under his season-best 2.17m to earn the conference title.
 
FIU dominated the women’s pole vault, tallying 19 points in the event. Panther Nicole Janse Van Rensburg leaped 4.22m for the title, and Luciana Gomez-Iriondo placed top three with her mark of 4.07m.
 
Middle Tennessee went 1-2-3 in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Carmelo Cannizzaro won the event with a time of 9:27.37, followed by fellow Blue Raiders Brian Kiptoo (9:30.25) and Vincent Yegon (9:53.05).
 
Liberty led the women’s steeple to further the Flame’s lead in the meet. Calli Doan won the title with a time of 10:56.69. Joining her at the podium, Katrina Schlenker clocked in at 11:09.32 to earn silver hardware.
 
Tonight’s running prelims were highlighted by UTEP’s Niesha Burger coming a mere .02s away from the women’s 200m CUSA meet record. She has a chance to break the record of 22.66s in tomorrow’s final.
 
The last day of the CUSA Outdoor Championships will feature event finals in the discus, triple jump, women’s high jump, 4x100m relays, 1500m, hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 200m, 5000m and 4x400 relays. The men’s discus will begin at 11:30 a.m. MST.
