ITF: Liberty Men, Kennesaw State Women named 2026 CUSA Indoor Track and Field Champions

LYNCHBURG, Va. –  The Liberty men’s team and Kennesaw State women’s team have been named the 2026 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Champions following the two-day championship event at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Virginia.
 
Liberty and Kennesaw State finished top two on both the men’s and women’s side for the second year in a row. The Flames’ men’s program distanced themselves from runner-up Kennesaw State, finishing with 196 points to the Owls’ 159. It was a closer race on the women’s side, with Kennesaw State collecting 140.5 points, helping to hold Liberty to 126.5.
 
The final three heptathlon events got things underway on Saturday morning. Gabriel Willis maintained his lead from day one, winning the multi-event for the second year in a row with a total of 5,273 points. Jake Nicholson finished second for the Flames, recording 5,084 points and UTEP’s Oleksander Blonskyi finished third with 4,823 points.
 
Day two’s field events began with the start of the women’s shot put, women’s high jump and men’s triple jump. In the women’s shot put, Liberty’s Bethany Tate claimed the title with a throw of 15.38 meters (50-05.50). LA Tech’s A’reil Williams captured gold in the women’s high jump, hitting a mark of 1.77 meters (5-09.75). Liberty swept the podium in the men’s triple jump with three personal best performances. Gilles Ouedraogo led the group with a mark of 16.18 meters (53-01.00).
 
The men’s shot put, women’s triple jump and men’s high jump closed field events for the weekend. Liberty’s Christian Hicks (18.06 meters, 59-03.00) won the men’s shot put, FIU’s Danielle Mcgonigle won the won the women’s triple jump with a personal best mark of 12.67 meters (41-07.00) and Kennesaw State’s Kenyatte Bennett (2.12 meters, 6-11.50) won the men’s high jump.
 
Finals started on the track with the women’s mile. Liberty’s Allie Zealand broke away with an impressive final lap, crossing the finish line in 4:37.83 and winning the event for the second consecutive year. She went on to win the women’s 3,000-meter run as well.
 
UTEP’s Juan Leal ran a personal best time of 4:07.50 to secure the men’s mile title.
 
Kennesaw State claimed the top two spots in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with Tickia Sutton winning in a time of 8.37 seconds and Natalie Harris finishing close behind in a time of 8.39 seconds.
 
The afternoon brought multiple new meet records, starting in the men’s 60-meter hurdles where Liberty’s Tahj Brown won with a personal best time of 7.70 seconds. LA Tech’s Jamara Patterson also recorded a new meet record, winning the women’s 400 meter run in a season best time of 52.66 seconds.
 
Winning the men’s 400-meter run was LA Tech’s Frank Bradley-Reed who crossed the finish line in 46.65 seconds.
 
In the sprints, Kennesaw State swept the men’s and women’s 60-meter dash. Kenadie Singleton won the women’s race in 7.35 seconds. On the men’s side, Chance Cross reclaimed his title in a time of 6.56 seconds, beating the meet and facility record of 6.61 that he broke last season.
 
New Mexico State’s Marlee Cavitt won the women’s 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 23.65 seconds. For the men, MTSU’s Mustapha Bokpin finished first, crossing the finish line in a time of 20.88 seconds.
 
For the 800-meter run, the Owls dominated the women’s race while the Blue Raiders controlled the men’s race. Emma Sullivan won the event for the second year in a row, breaking her previous meet record and setting a new facility record with a time of 2:02.89. She led teammate Britney Chatfield who finished second in 2:03.99. Mackdonald Songok and Wail Bourahli also surpassed a previous meet record. Songok set a new 800-meter record time of 1:47.58 to win the event in front of Bourahli who finished second with a time of 1:48.15.
 
Middle Tennessee also had a strong showing in the men’s 3,000-meter run. Moses Lekokei and Jacinto Gaspar finished first and second in 8:34.74 and 8:35.48, respectively.
 
The weekend closed in two exciting 4x400 meter relays where the Owls ultimately claimed both titles. On the women’s side, Kennesaw State put together an impressive performance to win the relay and claim a new meet and facility record time of 3:37.37. KSU’s men’s relay team also set a new facility record, winning the event with a time of 3:09.35.
 
After excelling on the track, Lekokei and Zealand were named the CUSA Men’s and Women’s High Point Scorers of the Meet. As the highest scoring freshmen, the CUSA Men’s Freshman of the Meet title went to Clark and the Women’s Co-Freshman of the Meet titles went to Kylie Niera and Sutton.
 
The indoor season will continue as teams set their eyes on the NCAA DI Indoor Track and Field Championships scheduled to take place March 13-14 at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
