Corvallis, Ore. – Liberty’s
Michael Lugiano claimed his spot at the NCAA Championships with an impressive win at the Corvallis Regional Wednesday afternoon.
The sophomore recorded his second collegiate victory, leading the field with a 12-under par 201 (68-66-67). Lugiano’s second round of 66 (-5) tied his career low, helping to move his way up the leaderboard. With the win, Lugiano becomes the first CUSA golfer to capture an individual title at an NCAA Regional since 2013.
The complete Liberty squad came close to joining Lugiano at the championship after finishing the final round tied for fifth (9-under par 843) and forcing a playoff with No. 42 San Diego. Ultimately, the Toreros were able to claim the final team spot with a playoff victory in two rounds.
Lugiano will prepare to compete at the NCAA Championships starting May 29 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
