DALLAS – FIU completed a sweep of the Conference USA Men’s Basketball weekly honors as Denver Jones and Arturo Dean each earned their first award of the season. The 2022-23 C-USA Players of the Week awards are presented by Blenders Eyewear and are voted on by the league’s sports information directors.
 
Jones is the league’s Player of the Week after averaging 24.5 points and extending his streak of 20-point performances to four games. Dean, the conference’s Freshman of the Week, averaged 15.5 points on 48.1 percent shooting to lift FIU (8-7, 2-2 C-USA) to consecutive C-USA wins over Top 100 NET opponents in Charlotte and reigning conference champion UAB.
 
Player of the Week – Denver Jones, FIU – Guard – New Market, Ala.
Jones’ career night of 29 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals helped the Panthers overcome a 15-point deficit and upset defending conference champion UAB in overtime on Saturday. He converted all 11 attempts from the free-throw line, including six makes in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime. Jones posted game highs in points (20) and rebounds (eight) in a 62-60 win over Charlotte on Thursday, snapping a four-game skid against the 49ers. He tallied 14 points in the opening half and finished the game with three assists as well.
 
Freshman of the Week – Arturo Dean, FIU – Guard – Miami, Fla.
Dean played the hero in FIU’s comeback victory over defending conference champion UAB, hitting the go-ahead score in the final minute of regulation, knocking down a game-tying three in overtime and corralling the steal that led to the game-winning fastbreak layup in the final seconds. He finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. On Thursday, Dean posted 15 points on 7-13 shooting to go with a pair of steals and a block. Through four league games, he leads the team and ranks sixth in C-USA with 2.3 steals per game.
