2015 C-USA Men's Soccer Awards Announced

Nov. 10, 2015

IRVING, Texas - For the second time in as many seasons, Kentucky senior goalkeeper Callum Irving garnered a league-high three Conference USA men's soccer specialty awards, while head coach Johan Cedergren earned Coach of the Year honors. Awards are selected by a vote of the league's nine head men's soccer coaches.

Irving was voted the Conference USA Player of the Year, the Conference USA Defensive MVP and a First-Team All-C-USA selection -- all accolades he was bestowed a year ago. He also repeats as recipient of the Golden Glove Award, given to the goalkeeper who posts the most shutouts in C-USA play. On the year, Irving holds a 0.57 goals-against average (8th, NCAA) and an .821 save percentage (20th, NCAA) through all 17 matches played, totaling nine shutouts. Seven of the clean sheets came against C-USA opponents as he notched a 0.12 goals-against average, allowing just one goal in eight conference matches (773:45 minutes).

Cedergren was named a Co-C-USA Coach of the Year this season after leading the Wildcats to their first C-USA regular-season title. Under Cedergren's guidance, UK went 12-3-2 in 2015 and 7-0-1 in C-USA action, marking just the fourth time in C-USA history a team has gone undefeated in league play. As regular-season champion, Kentucky is the No. 1 seed for the 2015 C-USA Men's Soccer Championship and earns the only bye of the tournament, advancing directly to the semifinals. UK appeared in the NSCAA poll in all but one week of the season, achieving a No. 12 national ranking in the Nov. 3 release.

Scott Calabrese of FIU shared the Coach of the Year award with Cedergren after turning around the Panther program. In just his second season at the helm, Calabrese led FIU to a 9-6-1 mark as the team will make its first trip to the C-USA Championship since 2007. FIU returned to the national polls this season, reaching as high as No. 14 in the NCAA rankings, and has boasted one of the nation's top offenses throughout the campaign. Junior defender Marvin Hezel, an All-Conference USA first-team selection, has played a key role in the team's resurgence, appearing in all 16 games for the Panthers.

Charlotte senior Kyle Parker repeated as the C-USA Offensive MVP after sharing the honor in 2014. The forward also earns the 2015 C-USA Golden Boot Award after scoring the most goals (7) in league play. Parker leads the league with 27 points (13th, NCAA), 12 goals (10th, NCAA) and five game-winning goals (8th, NCAA). In eight C-USA games this season, Parker was tops in points (16), goals (7) and game-clinching tallies (3). He was the only C-USA player to score on Irving this season, netting a game-tying goal with 55 seconds remaining in regulation against the Wildcats.

Freshman of the Year honors went to Niko Klosterhalfen of Old Dominion. The midfielder appeared in 14 games for the Monarchs, earning 13 starts. Klosterhalfen tied for second on the team in goals (4) and points (11) as part of ODU's balanced offensive attack. The newcomer registered a goal and an assist in Old Dominion wins over nationally-ranked Akron and conference foe UAB.

Kentucky is also represented on the All-C-USA first team by juniors Napo Matsoso and Jordan Wilson. Matsoso started 15 games at midfield, leading the team with 14 points on four goals, three of which were game-winners, and six assists. Wilson has anchored a Wildcat back line that boasts a shutout percentage of 0.59 (5th, NCAA) and a team goals-against average of 0.56 (6th, NCAA). The defender has also contributed on offense, scoring the game-winning goal against South Carolina and adding two assists on the season.

Junior Brandt Bronico of Charlotte joins teammate Parker on the first team. The midfielder is second in the league with eight assists (19th, NCAA). Bronico also ranks second only to Parker in goals (7), points (22) and game-winning goals (3) on the 49er squad. Two of his three game-clinchers have come against C-USA foes; South Carolina and at New Mexico. The dynamic duo of Bronico and Parker have combined for 49 points (19 goals, 11 assists) of Charlotte's 87 points and eight of the team's 10 game-winning goals.

Old Dominion received two First-Team All-C-USA nods in seniors Ivan Militar and Michael Nelson. Militar has played every game this season at midfield for ODU, leading the team in assists (6) and total points (12). He registered the game-winning goal in back-to-back matches against non-conference opponents. Nelson has started all 15 matches at center back, captaining a Monarch squad that has blanked five opponents en route to a 0.94 team goals-against average. He also notched a goal and an assist this season.

First-Team All-C-USA accolades also went to junior Chris Wehan of New Mexico. The midfielder has started every match for the Lobos this season, serving as the team's offensive catalyst. Wehan is tied for second in C-USA with 10 goals (23rd, NCAA), including four game-winners (15th, NCAA). He helped lead the Lobos to wins over three top-25 opponents, burying the game-winner against No. 19 UCSB and at No. 20 Loyola Marymount. Wehan was the consensus Sept. 8 National Player of the Week, earning the distinction from the NSCAA, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer.

Junior transfer Danny Deakin has made quite the impact during his first season at South Carolina. The midfielder has started all 17 matches this year, leading the Gamecocks in scoring with 10 goals (23rd, NCAA) and 22 points. Deakin has paced South Carolina to 10 wins this year, four of which have come against top-15 opponents. He scored the game-winning goal against previously undefeated and then-No. 8 Elon as well as then-(RV) FIU. Deakin also recorded a hat trick in a 3-3 double-overtime draw with UNC Greensboro.

Rounding out the All-C-USA first team is UAB senior Ian Svantesson. After starting the season at defender, Svantesson was put up top to aid the Blazer scoring attack beginning Sept. 25. Following the move, he found the back of the net in five of eight games for UAB, totaling six goals and two helpers. Svantesson finished second in points (14), goals (6) and game-winning goals (2) in conference games.

Coaches also selected an All-Conference USA second and third team as well as an all-freshman squad.

The 2015 Conference USA Men's Soccer Championship kicks off Wednesday at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlotte, FIU, Kentucky, Marshall, New Mexico, Old Dominion and South Carolina are set to compete in the seven-team, three-day championship. All three quarterfinal matches and both semifinal games will be streamed on the C-USA Digital Network. The championship match is set for Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. EST and will be televised live on FOX Sports Networks.
