DALLAS –
Jamil Roberts’ tip-in goal in overtime gave No. 10-ranked and Conference USA champion Marshall the 2020 NCAA Men’s College Cup National Championship with 1-0 victory over No. 2-ranked and No. 3 national seed Indiana at Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.
Marshall won its first men’s soccer title through a tournament gauntlet of No. 1 national seed Clemson, No. 8 seed and defending national champion Georgetown, North Carolina and No. 3 seed Indiana in the final four games to lift the trophy. The Herd became the first team in Conference USA history to win a NCAA national title.
Final Stats
It was the third straight game Roberts and Dias combined on the winning Marshall goal, as Roberts’ goal in the quarterfinals from an assist by Dias was the difference in a 1-0 victory over Georgetown, and Roberts put the Herd in the national title game with a goal via assists from both Dias and Yosef in the 1-0 semifinal victory over North Carolina.
In overtime, Marshall took control of ball possession as it had for most of the game.
Milo Yosef had the ball about 25 yards out in the center of the field, and he passed it to
Vitor Dias just outside the 18. Dias strode inside the box and attempted a shot just inside the 18 that deflected off an Indiana defender and caromed back to him. Dias immediately took a strong second shot that thudded off the hands of Hoosiers goaltender
Roman Celentano. The ball skipped backward off the turf, and nicked both the underside of the crossbar and the side of the right post. Roberts, who slid toward the post after Dias’ first attempt, struck the loose ball with his left foot into the net past a late-diving Celentano for the golden goal – his fifth goal of the season.
The goal set off a wild celebration on the field and in the stands, which was predominantly made up of Marshall supporters who made the trip from Huntington to cheer on the Herd.
Roberts was named the tournament’s Offensive Most Outstanding Player. Marshall’s Dias,
Nathan Dossantos,
Vinicius Fernandes and
Max Schneider were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
After a tense 90 minutes of regulation that saw both the Thundering Herd and the Hoosiers get strong opportunities to score, the game went to overtime. The Herd (13-2-3) had an overwhelming 14-8 margin in total shots in regulation over the Hoosiers (11-2-2), including 6-1 in shots on goal.
Marshall goalkeeper
Oliver Semmle had one save in the game for the Herd, while Celentano made seven saves in net for the Hoosiers.
