DALLAS – No. 10-ranked and Conference USA champion Marshall engineered the upset of the tournament as the Thundering Herd tied No. 1-ranked and No. 1 national seed Clemson 1-1 in 2OT and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship 7-6 in a penalty-kick shootout in Cary, North Carolina.
It is the first time a Conference USA team has defeated a No. 1-ranked team in the NCAA men’s tournament.

The five-round PK shootout was tied 4-4 after Marshall’s
Jamil Roberts scored on his attempt to force sudden-death rounds against the Tigers. Each team scored on its sixth and seventh attempts. On the eighth attempt, Marshall netminder and C-USA Goalkeeper of the Year

Vitor Dias then buried his PK attempt into the upper right corner of the net, setting off a wild celebration with the Herd fans who made the trip to Cary.
The Thundering Herd (10-2-3) advances to the quarterfinal round, where they will face No. 7-ranked and No. 8 national seed Georgetown, the defending national champions, on May 10 at 12 p.m. CT from WakeMed Field #2. This is the first time in program history that Marshall will play in the quarterfinal round, and it will be the first time a C-USA team has reached the quarterfinals since 2018.
Marshall took a 1-0 in the 15th minute on a goal by
Max Schneider, his second of the season. Clemson (14-3-3) tied the game 1-1 in the 32nd minute when
Callum Johnson scored his 5th goal of the season. Each team took 12 shots in the game, and Clemson held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal and a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
No. 24 Kentucky (12-5-2) had its season ended by No. 4-ranked and No. 5 national seed Wake Forest 2-1 at WakeMed Field #2 in Cary. The Demon Deacons used a pair of goals by
Kyle Holcomb in the 20th and 62nd minutes for a 2-0 lead. Kentucky’s
Brock Lindow cut the Wake lead in half with a goal in the 66th minute, but the ‘Cats could not find the equalizer in the final minutes.
Final Stats
The Wildcats outshot the Demon Deacons 18-8, including 5-4 in shots on goal. Kentucky also had seven corner kicks to Wake Forest’s four.
